John Berry

John Robert Berry Sr., 72, of Villa Park, died Friday, March 6, after a six-month battle with cancer.
Visitation will be Thursday, March 12, at Steuerle Funeral Home, 350 S. Ardmore Ave., Villa Park.
Funeral services will be held Friday, March 13, at the funeral home. Interment is at Chapel Hill Gardens West Cemetery in Oakbrook Terrace.
Mr. Berry is survived by his wife and best friend of 50 years, Dianne; daughter, Debbie (Richard) Guggino; sister, Maureen (the Rev. Charles) Hanna; sister-in-law, Judy (John) Lewis; five nieces and nephews; and friends, caregiver, Sandra, and canine companion, Cindy. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alberta and Edward Berry; son, John R. Jr.; and brother, Raymond Berry.
Mr. Berry was born in Mexico, Mo., and had worked for International Harvester in Melrose Park for 35 years.

Roberta Cassidy

Roberta S. Cassidy, 82 nee Shepard, died Monday, March 9, at Villa Scalabrini Nursing Home in Northlake.
Visitation will be today, March 11, at Brust Funeral Home, 135 S. Main St., Lombard.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 12, with prayers from the funeral home to Mass at Christ the King Church in Lombard. Interment is private at Elmwood Cemetery in Hammond, Ind.
Mrs. Cassidy is survived by her children, Barbara (Dennis) Horsky, Kathleen (Jim) Lasota of Lombard, George (Robin) and Robert (Deborah); and nine grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Francis; and grandson, Matthew Cassidy.
Mrs. Cassidy was a resident of Lombard since 1967. She grew up in Marshfield, Wis., and was a graduate of the University of Wisconsin, Stevens Point, with a B.A. in English. She was a former substitute teacher in Lombard, a member of Martha’s Circle at Christ the King, and volunteered at the York Township Senior Center. She was an avid bridge player.

Alma Geuss

Alma Irene Geuss, nee Kott, 83, of Lombard, died Sunday, March 8, at Lexington Health Care.
Visitation and funeral services will be Thursday, March 12, at Brust Funeral Home, 135 S. Main St., Lombard. Interment is at Assumption Cemetery in Wheaton.
Mrs. Geuss is survived by her husband, Paul; children, Gregory (Judi) and Paula (Mark) Tanabe; and two grandsons.
Mrs. Geuss has been a resident of Lombard since 1965.

Karl Goellner

Karl A. Goellner, 59, of Cape Coral, Fla., formerly of Lombard, died Dec. 22, 2008, in Florida.
A celebration of life will be held Saturday, March 14, at Christ Our Savior Lutheran Church in Winfield, to which family and friends are invited.
Mr. Goellner is survived by his wife, Dale; children, John (Kristen), Julie (Aaron) White, Jody and Jennifer; three grandchildren; and siblings, Emil (Nancy) Goellner and Bonny (Ian) Goellner Chick. He was preceded in death by his parents, Emil and Mary Goellner; and parents-in-law, Sol and Charlotte Berman.
Mr. Goellner was a longtime resident of Lombard before moving to Cape Coral in 1985.
In lieu of flowers, memorials to the American Heart Association, 3816 Paysphere Circle, Chicago Il 60674, would be appreciated.

Casimir Janicki

Casimir J. Janicki, 91, of San Antonio, Texas, formerly of Chicago, died Tuesday, March 3, in Texas.
Funeral services were held Monday, March 9, with prayers from Brust Funeral Home, 135 S. Main St. Lombard, to Mass at Immaculate Conception Church in Elmhurst. Interment was at Chapel Hill Gardens West Cemetery in Oakbrook Terrace.
Mr. Janicki is survived by his children, Anthony (Linda) and Karen (fiancé, Dennis Fenton); and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Anthony and Frances Janicki; wife, Margaret; granddaughter, Alisa; and brothers, Joseph and Stanley.
Mr. Janicki served in the U.S. Army during World War II, from 1941-45, as a medic assigned to the Second Evacuation Hospital in support of the D Day Normandy Invasion, the Battle of the Bulge and the Rhineland Campaign. He retired from Western Electric Co. in Cicero after 35 years of service.
Memorials to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, would be appreciated.

James LaCassa

James LaCassa, 84, of Lombard, died Monday, March 9, in Lombard.
Funeral services will be held today, March 11, from Knollcrest Funeral Home, 1500 S. Meyers Road, Lombard, to Mass at Christ the King Catholic Church, with the Rev. John Guiney officiating. Entombment is at Queen of Heaven Cemetery in Hillside.
Mr. LaCassa is survived by his wife, Marie; sons, Anthony and James; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; siblings, Anthony (Patricia) LaCassa, Marie (the late Andy) Lang and Patrick (Joann) LaCassa; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Marilyn (Joseph) Roskoske; and siblings, Anthony and Joseph LaCassa and Antoinette DeVivo.
Mr. LaCassa had worked in road construction.

Edward Slyfield

Edward Forrest Slyfield, 69, of Lombard, died Monday, March 2, at Elmhurst Extended Care in Elmhurst.
A memorial service was held Friday, March 6, at Faith Lutheran Church in Glen Ellyn. Interment was private.
Mr. Slyfield is survived by his wife of 47 years, Donna; children, Diana (John) Doyle and Forrest (Amy); three grandchildren; sister-in-law, Doris Slyfield; and aunt, Betty Marx.
Mr. Slyfield was a veteran of the U.S. Army, and received a B.S. degree from Wisconsin Milwaukee in 1961. He was a graduate of Chicago Kent College of Law in 1979, and was employed at ABRIX Group L.P. from 1969 to 2008 for over 39 years as a tax consultant.
Mr. Slyfield loved to travel; enjoyed classical music, especially opera; loved golf and reading; and loved animals, especially dogs.
In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Helen M. Plum Memorial Library or Orphans of the Storm would be appreciated.

Elizabeth Symber

Elizabeth E. Symber, 94, died Saturday, Feb. 28.
Funeral services were held Thursday, March 5, at Immaculate Conception Church in Elmhurst. Interment was at Queen of Heaven Cemetery in Hillside.
Mrs. Symber is survived by her children, Jerry, Marcia (Jim) Maurer, Diane (Phil) Daniel, Roger (Rose) and Judie; nine grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Peter and Mary Decker; and husband, Frank.
Mrs. Symber was born in Michigan, the youngest of 10 children. She lived in Elmhurst and Lombard for 58 years, and most recently at Bridgeway Christian Village in Bensenville. Prior to that she lived at Liberty Village Senior Apartments in Elmhurst for eight years. She had worked at Hamburger Heaven in Elmhurst for many years and later at Harris Bank in Lombard.
Masses for her and Frank, to be said at the National Shrine of St. Jude, 3200 E. 91st St., Chicago, would be appreciated.

Richard Welch

Richard J. Welch, 81, of Lombard, died Wednesday, March 4, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove.
Funeral services were held Saturday, March 7, with prayers from Brust Funeral Home, 135 S. Main St., Lombard, to Mass at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Lombard. Interment was at St. Adalbert Cemetery in Niles.
Mr. Welch is survived by his wife of 55 years, Loretta; children, Matthew (Laurie), Thomas (Susan) and Patricia (Jordan) Selvey; 12 grandchildren; brother, Clarence (Frances); and many other family and friends. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Christine.
Mr. Welch was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps. He had worked for and retired from Eastman Kodak in Oak Brook. He collected stamps and Lionel trains, played and loved baseball, enjoyed fishing and vacationing in Eagle River, and loved to watch his grandchildren play and participate with them.
