Carolyn Beatty

Carolyn Beatty, 67, of Cleveland, Tenn., passed away Saturday, March 7, 2009.
Carolyn was a beloved mother, sister and aunt. She was a compassionate, heart-strong woman dedicated to her Christian faith and played piano and wrote songs in her spare time.
Born and raised in Cleveland, Tenn., she settled in Lombard in the early 1960s for approximately 30 years, relocating back to Cleveland in 1991, where she was a successful realtor.
She was preceded in death by per parents, Horace and Melvene Hall of Cleveland, Tenn.
She is survived by her children, James Beatty Jr. and Joseph R. Beatty; ex-husband, James Beatty; two sisters, Devada Ball and Gala Hall; brother, Milton Hall; many nieces and nephews; and too many friends to list.

Jerry Giesler

Jerry B. Giesler, formerly of Lombard and Glen Ellyn, died Saturday, Feb. 28, in Glen Arbor, Mich.
He is survived by his wife, Mary; children, Kurt (Patti), Kristen Paul (Jim) and Carrie Giesler (Shawn); four grandchildren; and brother, Jim (Pauline).

C. William Hoglund, DDS

C. William Hoglund, DDS, 90, formerly of Lombard, died Sunday, March 1, at Tabor Hills Health Care Center in Naperville.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 21, at First Church of Lombard in Lombard.
Dr. Hoglund is survived by his wife of 65 years, Leona; children, Kristin Rardin, Neil (Marie), Claudia (Reco) Huggins and Paul (Susanne); eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Dr. Hoglund was a resident of Lombard from 1951-97 and then of Tabor Hills Retirement Community. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army during World War II, where he was in the medical department, serving in the South Pacific with the Army’s 37th Infantry Division, 129th Regiment “Buckeyes” from 1943-46.
Dr. Hoglund graduated from North Park College in 1938 with a B.S. and a DDS, and practiced dentistry in Lombard from 1947-88. He was a member of First Church of Lombard, serving as a delegate to the General Synod of the UCC in 1948; was the chairman of the Lombard Human Relations Council from 1958-63; served on the board of Christian Witness from 1987-90; and received the James M. Yard Brotherhood Award in 1960.
Dr. Hoglund received a Senior Olympic Certificate of recognition in table tennis in 1985, and was known for trying to make the world a better place by helping break down racial barriers and to work for peace.

George Kapetanopoulos

George T. Kapetanopoulos, 64, of Glendale Heights, died Tuesday, March 10, in Glendale Heights.
Funeral services were held Friday, March 13, at Brust Funeral Home, 135 S. Main St., Lombard. Interment was at Elmwood Cemetery in River Grove.
Mr. Kapetanopoulos is survived by his wife of almost 40 years, Alice; sons, T.J. and Chris (Stacy); one grandson; sister, Olga (Nick) Kollias; brothers-in-law, John Andros and Teddy Antalis; and many nieces and nephews.
Mr. Kapetanopoulos was a resident of Glendale Heights for 34 years. He was the founder of GB Soccer in Glendale Heights and Bloomingdale and was the former commissioner of Glenside T-Ball. He was an avid golfer and soccer fan.

Helen Koeppel

Helen M. Koeppel, nee Vensel, 90, of Villa Park, died Tuesday, March 10, in Villa Park.
Funeral services were held Monday, March 16, at Brust Funeral Home, 135 S. Main St., Lombard. Interment was at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Hillside.
Mrs. Koeppel is survived by her children, Barry (Carol), Diane (Paul) Madsen and Darlene (Bill) Andresen; and seven grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy C.; and siblings, Dorothy, Nancy and Jack.
Mrs. Koeppel was born in Pennsylvania and was a resident of Villa Park for over 50 years. She worked as a secretary for Sears Roebuck and Co. in Chicago for five years, then for Texaco Co. She moved to join her husband at the Aberdeen Proving Ground just outside Baltimore, Md., and worked as a secretary for the civilian head civil engineer.
In 1946 the family moved to Broadview and then to Villa Park. Mrs. Koeppel worked at the local discount store Benjamin Alan, was active at Lincoln School in Villa Park, was a co-chairman for a Girl Scout group and a Cub Scout den mother. She later worked for six different market research companies. She enjoyed relating childhood stories to her family, including her grandchildren.

Thea Lodens

Thea J. Lodens, nee Sont, 71, of Lombard, died Wednesday, March 11, at Elmhurst Memorial Hospital in Elmhurst.
Funeral services were held Saturday, March 14, at Brust Funeral Home, 135 S. Main St., Lombard. Interment was private.
Mrs. Lodens is survived by her husband of 48 years, George; sons, Ivo (Cheryl) and Edwin; three grandchildren; and siblings, Coby (Jacob) Schilder, Mia (Dirk) Blaauboer, Jon (Bep) Sont and Louis Sont.
Mrs. Lodens loved spending time with her grandchildren.

Kermitt Mowbray

Kermitt R. Mowbray, 99, of Naperville, formerly of Elmhurst, Lombard and Sarasota, Fla., died Monday, March 9, in Naperville.
Funeral services were held Friday, March 13, from Friedrich-Jones Funeral Home, 44 S. Mill St., Naperville, to a graveside service at Chapel Hill Gardens West Cemetery in Oakbrook Terrace.
Mr. Mowbray is survived by his children, Kenneth (Eleanor) and Jean (Vern) Schulze; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and many wonderful friends. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Anna Mae Mowbray, whom he married in 1931; his second wife, Mabel Mowbray; and parents, John and Daney Mowbray.
Mr. Mowbray grew up in North Dakota, attended Valley City Teachers College in Valley City and moved to Illinois in the early 1930s. He worked for Ovaltine Corp. in Villa Park, Helene Curtis Co. in Chicago, Standard Kollsman Co. in Melrose Park and retired from Standard Grigsby in Aurora.
In his younger days, Mr. Mowbray had played the clarinet and saxophone with the Agony Hounds, touring on the same circuit as Lawrence Welk. He was a life member of the Elmhurst Masonic Lodge No. 941; enjoyed gardening, socializing, playing cards and Yahtzee; and enjoyed walking throughout the neighborhood.

Ruth Stafford

Ruth M. Stafford, 98, of Beacon Hill, Lombard, formerly of Joliet, died Saturday, March 14, at Beacon Hill Health Center in Lombard.
Private interment will be at Northshore Garden of Memories Cemetery in North Chicago. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
Miss Stafford was preceded in death by her sister, Marian E. “Billie” Stafford; and parents, William and Lulu Stafford.
Miss Stafford had been a resident of Beacon Hill for 17 years and was formerly of Joliet since 1921. She was a graduate of Joliet High School and Joliet Junior College, and retired in May 1975 after 44 years of work in the offices of U.S. Steel in Joliet.

John Teune


John G. Teune, 62, of Lombard, died Monday, March 9.
A memorial service was held Saturday, March 14, at Steuerle Funeral Home, 350 S. Ardmore Ave., Villa Park.
Mr. Teune is survived by his wife, Nancy; daughters, Carol (Albert), Laura (John), Rachel and April; and six grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the family would be appreciated.

Esther Walz

Esther J. Walz, nee Riedner, 92, of Glen Ellyn, formerly of Chicago, died Sunday, March 15, in Glen Ellyn.
Visitation and funeral services will be held today, March 18, at Brust Funeral Home, 135 S. Main St., Lombard. Interment will be private at St. Joseph Cemetery in Chicago.
Mrs. Walz is survived by her sons, Alfon (Marjorie) and Robert (Kay) of Lombard; one granddaughter; and siblings, Elmer Riedner and Gladys Arend. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rudolf; and three brothers and one sister.
Mrs. Walz grew up in St. Joseph, Mich., and moved to Chicago in 1932. She had been a resident of Sunrise Assisted Living in Glen Ellyn for the past eight months. She was a homemaker, loved to crochet, and loved her family, her friends and the Lord.

John Zwicky, Ph.D.

John F. Zwicky, Ph.D., 62, of Lombard, died Tuesday, March 10, in Lombard.
Funeral services were held Monday, March 16, at St. Giles Catholic Parish in Oak Park.
Mr. Zwicky is survived by his wife, Donna Goetz; daughter, Elizabeth of Lombard; siblings, Stephen (Lauretta) Zwicky, Gerard (Sheryl) Zwicky, Mary (Robert) Leb, Bernard (Beth) Zwicky and Suzanne (Thomas) Freund; step-siblings, Kathy (Jon) Westphal, Karl Ziebert, Elaine (Kevin) Burke, Ken (Sharon) Ziebert, Ann (Stephen) Schneider and Paul (Debra) Ziebert; in-laws, Gary (Pam) Goetz, Karen Combs, Barbara (Rick) Egan and Douglas (Colleen) Goetz; father- and mother-in-law, Norbert and Inga Goetz; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Loretta Zwicky; stepmother, Eunice Manthey Ziebert Zwicky; stepbrother, Tod Ziebert; and niece, Tiffany Freund.
Mr. Zwicky earned his bachelor’s degree in history from Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa, in 1968. He worked in downtown Chicago for the Social Security Administration throughout the 1970s, and earned an M.A. in history from DePaul University in 1976, writing his thesis on the history of public transportation in Chicago. He was a member of the Central Electric Railroad Association and the National Association of Railroad Passengers. He often wrote letters to the Chicago Tribune to promote public transportation and rode Metra and CTA all the time, because he chose not to drive.
Mr. Zwicky worked at the Museum of Science and Industry while studying for his Ph.D. at Loyola University in Chicago, which he completed in 1989. He worked for the American Medical Association in the early 1990s as an archivist, and edited three books while at the AMA.
He also worked for the Barrington Historical Society and the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, and was the founding archivist of the Pediatric History Center of the American Academy of Pediatrics since October 1994. He was active at St. Giles Family Mass Community in Oak Park and won the Silver Prize Medal in ballroom dancing competition.
