Walter Bajek

Walter A. Bajek, 80, of Lombard, died Monday, March 2, at Elmhurst Memorial Hospital in Elmhurst.
Visitation will be today, March 4, at Brust Funeral Home, 135 S. Main St., Lombard.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 5, with prayers from the funeral home to Mass at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Lombard. Interment is at Resurrection Cemetery in Justice.
Mr. Bajek is survived by his wife, Rosemary; daughters, Amanda “Mandy” (Steven) Harnack and Elizabeth “Betsy” of Lombard; three grandchildren; and brother, Robert (Anne).
Mr. Bajek was a resident of Lombard for 54 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during the Korean War from 1953-55, in the 101st Airborne and the Chemical Warfare Unit. He was a graduate of Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) with a B.S. and M.S. in Engineering.
Mr. Bajek retired in 1999 after 50 years as a chemical engineer for UOP/Honeywell Inc. in Des Plaines. He had over 40 patents for UOP and received various awards for his work here and in England.
Mr. Bajek was a member of the American Petroleum Institute and AMEKO, a past president of the Lombard Lions Club, a Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus—Father  Boecker Council, a violinist and past president and fellow of the Instrument Society of America (ISA) and won the ISA Sperry Award, traveled widely covering five continents and was an usher at Sacred Heart Catholic Church for 40 years.

Fred Banister Jr.

Fred N. Banister Jr., of Arkansas, formerly of Lombard, died Monday, Feb. 23, in Mountain. Home, Ark.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Feb. 28, at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lombard. Interment was at Acacia Park Cemetery in Chicago.
Mr. Banister is survived by his wife, Donna J., whom he met during grade school at St. John’s, and married in 1956 at St. John’s; children, Sharon (Stephen) Sampson, Gail (Larry) Bell and Dale (Kristine Pero); five grandchildren; sister, Marie Mills; and many nieces and nephews.
Mr. Banister attended St. John’s Lutheran School and was a 1954 graduate of York High School in Elmhurst. He was an Eagle Scout and veteran of the Illinois National Guard.
Mr. Banister was a resident of Lombard until 1978, and during that time he was a member of the Lombard Volunteer Fire Department and retired as a battalion chief after 20 years of service.
In 1978, Mr. Banister moved to Green Lake, Wis., where he was employed by the Green Lake County Sheriff’s Department as a dispatcher and later as a communications/corrections administrator, retiring after 14 years. He then moved to Lakeview, Ark., to live on Shoals Lake, where he enjoyed boating, fishing and working in his yard.

John Birchall

John A. Birchall, of Lombard, died Sunday, March 1, in Lombard.
Visitation will be today, March 4, at DuPage Memorial Chapel, 951 W. Washington St., West Chicago.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 5, at the chapel. Interment is private.
Mr. Birchall is survived by his wife of 58 years, Elaine; and son, Kerry W. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charlotte and John A. Birchall Sr.; son, John M.; and sisters, Mona and Ruth.
Mr. Birchall was a resident of Lombard for 56 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during World War II, and was retired after working as a cabinet maker. He had an avid love for country music and performed in Nashville and at many locations in the Western suburbs.

Adeline Hamilton

Adeline M. Hamilton, nee Goski, 94, of Downers Grove, died Friday, Feb. 27, at Resthaven West in Downers Grove.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 2, at Brust Funeral Home, 135 S. Main St., Lombard. Interment was at Chapel Hill Gardens South in Oak Lawn.
Mrs. Hamilton is survived by her son, Stewart (Leigh) of Lombard; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Maxwell.
Mrs. Hamilton had been a resident of Downers Grove for one year, and was formerly a resident of Tinley Park for over 40 years. She retired to Florida but returned to Woodridge where she was a resident for seven years.
Mrs. Hamilton was a former Eastern Star member and a former member of Tinley Park Methodist Church, where she sang in the choir. She was a current member of Faith Methodist Church in Downers Grove.

William Hannafan

William M. Hannafan, 85, of Glen Ellyn, died Tuesday, Feb. 24, in Glen Ellyn.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Feb. 28, at St. Petronille Catholic Church in Glen Ellyn.
Mr. Hannafan is survived by his children, Chris, Patricia Holden and Kathleen Gallagher; four grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; sister, Mary Patricia Lach; and former son-in-law, Tom Holden. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys; and son, Michael.
Mr. Hannafan was a resident of Glen Ellyn since 1953. He was a member of St. Petronille Catholic Church, was a hospice volunteer and volunteer reader at the Glen Ellyn Public Library; and was said to have touched many lives.

Harold Keefe Jr.

Harold E. Keefe Jr., 84, of Lombard, formerly of Elmhurst, died Wednesday, Feb. 5, at Elmhurst Memorial Hospital in Elmhurst.
Funeral services were held Monday, March 2, with prayers from Brust Funeral Home, 135 S. Main St., Lombard, to Mass at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Lombard. Interment was at Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Hillside.
Mr. Keefe is survived by his children, David, John (Jane) and Lucy; one grandson; brother, David (Mary Joyce; sister-in-law, Dianne; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth “Betty”; and brother, Nicholas.
Mr. Keefe was a resident of Lombard for 18 years and was formerly of Elmhurst for 30 years. He had been a salesman in the funeral supply industry for over 40 years.

Joan Knutson

Joan C. Knutson, 77, of Yorkville, formerly of Lombard, died Tuesday, Feb. 24, at Rush-Copley Medical Center in Aurora.
Funeral services were held Friday, Feb. 27, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Yorkville, with the Rev. Daniel Cambra, MIC, officiating. Interment was at Assumption Cemetery in Wheaton.
Mrs. Knutson is survived by her husband, Kenneth C., whom she married in 1952; children, Michael (Nancy), Sherry (Scott) Lyden, Susan (Craig) Schumann and Sandra (Steve) Grebner; four grandchildren; one great-granddaughter and one on the way; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Hazel Young; and brother, Ronald Young.
Mrs. Knutson was fond of miniature houses and sharing that love with the Helen M. Plum Memorial Library in Lombard and the library and public schools of Yorkville.

James Patterson

James H. “Jim” Patterson, 88, of Carol Stream, formerly of Los Alamos, N.M., Lombard and Ames, Iowa, died Thursday, Feb. 26.
Funeral services were held Monday, March 2, at Lombard Gospel Chapel, 369 N. Steward, Lombard. Interment was at Guaje Pines Cemetery in Los Alamos.
Mr. Patterson is survived by his brother, John; children, Mary Jean (Louis) Suriano, Roger (Betty); Elisabeth (Neil) Osborn, Daniel (Kathy), and Barbara (Dr. Peter) Chang; 12 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jane; parents, Helena and James Price Patterson; and brother, Paul.
Mr. Patterson graduated from the University of Omaha in 1943 with a degree in chemistry, worked on a “war project” in the Yukon Territory, testing materials used in making airstrips along the AL-CAN Highway; and later took a position at Iowa State University, where he worked on the Manhattan Project and also received a Ph.D. in chemistry.
Mr. Patterson moved to Wheaton and later, Lombard, working at Argonne National Laboratory, where he worked on Surveyor7, which took soil samples from the moon prior to manned landings. In 1972 he moved to Los Alamos, where he was employed with Los Alamos National Laboratory. He resided in New Mexico for 25 years and recently relocated to Carol Stream.
Mr. Patterson was a man of faith who mentored many and became New Mexico director of Set Free Prison Ministry, providing Bibles and Bible study materials for inmates throughout New Mexico. He was also involved in missions and entertained missionaries in his home.
Memorials to Set Free Prison Ministries, Emmaus Bible College, Dubuque, Iowa, would be appreciated.

William Slevin

Funeral services for William Raymond Slevin, of DuPage County, were held Monday, March 2, at Steuerle Funeral Home, 350 S. Ardmore Ave., Villa Park. Interment was at St. Michael the Archangel Cemetery in Palatine.
Mr. Slevin is survived by his wife, Grace; children, Karen (Robert) Ferraro and William A. (Kristyn); three grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Joseph and George (Pegge).
Mr. Slevin was a veteran of the U.S. Army Corps., having served during World War II.

Edward Slyfield

Edward Forrest Slyfield, 69, of Lombard, died Monday, March 2, at Elmhurst Extended Care in Elmhurst.
A memorial gathering will be held Thursday, March 5, at Brust Funeral Home, 135 S. Main St., Lombard.
A memorial gathering will be held Friday, March 6 at Faith Lutheran Church in Glen Ellyn. Interment is private.

James Walsh

James Walsh, 87, of Villa Park, died Tuesday, Feb. 24, in Hinsdale.
Funeral services were held Friday, Feb. 27, from Knollcrest Funeral Home, 1500 S. Meyers Road, Lombard, to Mass at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Lombard, with the Rev. Herb Essig officiating. Interment was at Queen of Heaven Cemetery in Hillside.
Mr. Walsh is survived by his wife, Dolores; children, Mary Ellen (Randy) Petrbok, Jim (Mary), Tim (Pam), Terry (Karen), Maureen (Wayne) Vokac, Margie (Craig) Belluomini, Bob (Sherri), John (Cheryl) and Kathy (Dan) Ryan; 22 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by five sisters and two brothers.
Mr. Walsh had worked as a supervisor for Western Electric, and was a member of St. Pius X Church.

Gertrude Westphal

Gertrude R. Westphal, nee Hagerman, 91, of Lombard, died Monday, Feb. 23, at Oak Brook Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, Oak Brook.
Funeral services were private at Queen of Heaven Cemetery in Hillside.
Mrs. Westphal is survived by her children, William (Jacqueline) and Rita (Rich) Shafer of Lombard; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and many other relatives. She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert; children, Thomas, Richard and Judith; and two brothers.
Mrs. Westphal was a resident of Lombard for 85 years. She graduated from Westmore Grammar School and York High School in 1933. She was a member of St. Alexander Parish in Villa Park.
