William Bain


William “Bill” Bain, 72, of Lombard, died Thursday, Sept. 10, in Lombard.
Funeral services were held Monday, Sept. 14, at Faith United Methodist Church in Lombard. Interment was at Chapel Hill Gardens West Cemetery.
Mr. Bain is survived by his wife, Wilma; children, Susan (Robert) Hughes, Robert (Janet) and Scott (Holli); and five grandchildren.
Mr. Bain was a resident of Lombard for 42 years. He was employed by the University of Illinois for 38 years where he worked on all three campuses, with most of the time at UIC as director of admissions and records. His greatest achievements were the development and implementation of the Computer Information Systems. He was also very proud of his role in the development of the Office of International Criminal Justice at the University of Illinois Chicago campus.
Mr. Bain was an avid sports fan and followed Illini sports. He enjoyed bridge, gourmet and Romeo’s (Retired Old Men Eating Out), along with golf, bowling and traveling with his family and friends. His greatest passion was watching his grandchildren at play. He was known for establishing the tradition of Pizza at Papa’s every Friday night for both family and friends.
Memorials to Alpha Phi Omega (Eta Chapter) or the Faith United Methodist Church of Lombard would be appreciated.

Donald Bauer


Donald R. Bauer, of Lombard, died Wednesday, Sept. 30, in Lombard.
Funeral services were held Friday, Oct. 2, at Brust Funeral Home, 135 S. Main St., Lombard. Interment was private.
Mr. Bauer is survived by his wife, Sally; children, Ellen (Dudley) Sidwell, Ross A. and Glen P.; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sister, Maxine McNeill; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, Brian Ray Bauer.
Mr. Bauer was a resident of Lombard for 51 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served during World War II. For over 20 years he was a volunteer with the Lombard Fire Department and retired in 1988; he also retired from the Village of Lombard as the chief building inspector in 1987 after over 20 years. He was active with Boy Scout Troop #58; was a woodworker, fireman, gardener and fisherman, and loved his family.

Katherine Ganske


Katherine “Kathy” Ganske, 60, of Forsyth, Mo., died Thursday, Oct. 1, in Forsyth.
Memorial services were held Sunday, Oct. 4, at the Forsyth Whelchel Funeral Chapel in Forsyth.
Mrs. Ganske is survived by her children, Michelle L. Jackson, David and Bonnie; two grandchildren; and siblings, Michael F. (Donna) Smith and Marie Dowd. She was preceded in death by her parents, Michael and Marion Smith.
Mrs. Ganske moved to Forsyth in 2002. She worked as a unit coordinator at Point Lookout Nursing and Rehab in Hollister from July 2004 until September 2009. She attended the First Baptist Church of Forsyth.
Memorials to the Alzheimer’s Association or American Cancer Society would be appreciated.

L. Gaylen Krause


L. Gaylen Krause, 69, of Broken Arrow, Okla., formerly of Villa Park, died Sunday, Oct. 4, in Oklahoma.
Visitation will be Thursday, Oct. 8, at Brust Funeral Home, 135 S. Main St., Lombard.
Funeral services will be held Friday, Oct. 9, at the funeral home. Interment is at Elm Lawn Cemetery in Elmhurst.
Mr. Krause is survived by his former wife, Jean Baierbach Krause Hinkle, whom he married in 1961; children, Susan (Tim) McDowell, Scott (Carrie) and Jerry; five grandchildren; brothers, Lynn (Kay), Gary (Sue) of Lombard and Gilbert (Shirley); and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gerald A. and Philomene (Stibley) Krause; and brother, Loren Dee.
Mr. Krause was born in Sterling, Colo., and grew up in Villa Park. He was a 1958 graduate of York Community High School and a 1962 graduate of Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, with a B.S. degree in Business. He started his lifelong career with “The Associates” in Evansville, Ind.
Mr. Krause loved playing cards and board games with family; enjoyed fishing, golfing and endless games of gin with his brothers and best friend, Dr. William Lowry of Arlington, Texas. He was an avid Cubs fan until the day he died.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Mr. Krause’s honor may be made to the American Heart Association or the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society.

Dawne Lewis


Dawne Lewis, 79, of Lombard, died Tuesday, Sept. 29, at Iroquois Memorial Hospital in Watseka.
Visitation and funeral services will be held Thursday, Oct. 15, at Lombard Gospel Church in Lombard.
Mrs. Lewis is survived by her children, Holly (Robert) Rice, Tammy (George) Webber, John (Sue) and Charles (Teresa); eight grandchildren; and siblings, Edward (Gloria) Tetrev, Gladys (Robert) Sible and Carol (Norman) Kurz. She was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Gladys Tetrev; and husband, Glenn.
Mrs. Lewis was a member of the Lombard Gospel Church, was a former PTA president, past Girl Scout leader for many years and election judge for over 20 years. She was known for taking the time to inquire, listen and share happenings with people she met; for her sincere friendship; and for having a sharp memory even as her body took its toll.
Memorials to Lombard Gospel Church would be appreciated.

Lillian Price


Lillian R. Price, nee Bednar, 89, of Lombard, died Friday, Oct. 2, at Tabor Hills Health Center in Naperville.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Oct. 6, at Brust Funeral Home, 135 S. Main St., Lombard. Interment was at Woodlawn Cemetery in Forest Park.
Mrs. Price is survived by her daughter, Susan Lynn (Steve) Meyer; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and brother, Frank Bednar. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph A.; and sister-in-law, Lucille Bednar.

William Schuler


A memorial gathering for William H. Schuler, 84, of Fayetteville, N.C., formerly of Lombard, will be held Saturday, Oct. 10, at Knollcrest Funeral Home, 1500 S. Meyers Road, Lombard, with the Rev. Patrick Boomhower officiating. Interment is at Mount Emblem Cemetery.
Mr. Schuler is survived by his children, Patricia (Donald) Rakosnik of Lombard, Robert (Laura) and Kathleen (Charles) Vergan; five grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Beverly; and sister, Margaret (Rollin) Tremont.
Mr. Schuler had worked as a pipefitter and was a member of the Chicago Pipefitters Union Local #597. He loved fishing and gardening.

Frank Smogur Sr.


Frank E. Smogur Sr., 62, of Lombard, died suddenly Friday, Oct. 2, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Oct. 6, at Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Naperville. Interment was at Mt. Emblem Cemetery.
Mr. Smogur is survived by his wife of 41 years, Claudia; sons, Frank E. Jr. (Monica), Christopher (Iwona) and Andrew (Renee); three grandchildren; siblings, Edward (Katherine) and Jeanette (Bernard) Carpenter; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, Daniel.
Mr. Smogur was a resident of Lombard for 38 years. He grew up in Chicago and attended Harrison High School. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army from 1970-71, having served in Korea during the Vietnam War. He had been employed as as custodial supervisor for the DuPage County Health Department for the past 16 years.
Mr. Smogur loved fishing, boating, cars, football and attending all of his family’s and children’s events. He was known for being very family oriented.
In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Missionary Fund at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 1320 Ridgeland Ave., Naperville, IL 60563, would be appreciated.

Leonard Witkowski


Leonard C. Witkowski, 85, of Lombard, died Wednesday, Sept. 30, at DuPage Convalescent Center in Wheaton.
Funeral services were held Monday, Oct. 5, at Brust Funeral Home, 135 S. Main St., Lombard. Interment was private.
Mr. Witkowski is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mary; children, Larry (Mary), Tera and Laura; and sister, Audrey Siefert. He was preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Edward Siefert.
Mr. Witkowski was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps. He loved sports, especially football and baseball, and the Cubs and Bears.
