Helen McClure

Helen Margaret McClure (O’Brien) 1929-2010. In Loving Memory.

Helen Margaret McClure (O’Brien) 81, passed away at her home in St. Petersburg Fla., on Dec. 11, 2010. Born to Virginia and “Swede” O’Brien in Chicago, Ill., on Oct. 24, 1929, Helen Margaret brought joy and spirit into this world and her unexpected passing of natural causes will be a loss to family and friends.
Helen Margaret is survived by her loving husband of 60 years, Robert McClure; their three children, Robert, David and Cynthia (Endsley); grandchildren, Derek, James, Daniel, Melissa, Thomas, Madeline and Shane; half-brother, Gary Mantle; niece, Christine Getchell (O’Brien) and sister-in-law, Doris O’Brien.
Born on “Black Friday,” the day the stock market crashed introducing the Great Depression, Helen Margaret was a blend of intellect, innocence, devotion and love. She and her younger brother Johnny grew up in Dwight, Ill., raised by her loving mother, grandparents and extended family, having lost her father at the age of 5.
There, Helen Margaret developed lifelong friendships, excelled in her schoolwork and graduated from Dwight High School where, as a member of the debate team, she help lead them to the state championships. Helen went on to study at the University of Illinois, where as a freshman, she became a member of the Kappa Delta Sorority and met her husband-to-be, Robert.
Helen and Robert wed on Aug. 26, 1950, and moved to Camp Pendleton, Calif., while Robert was stationed there with the Marine Corps. After giving birth there to her eldest son Robert, Helen Margaret and her young family moved back to Urbana, Ill., where she gave birth to David. Following the birth of Cynthia in Davenport, Iowa, Helen and Robert bought a home in Lombard, Ill., where they lived for many years.
It was in Lombard where Helen devoted her time to raising her family, caring for her husband and developing lifelong friendships with many others. She was active in many community groups and became a member in the Lombard PEO Chapter IR in which she remained active throughout her entire life. In Lombard, and later at St. Petersburg Country Club, Helen Margaret was a coveted bridge partner and a feared competitor when the game turned to duplicate.
As her family responsibilities lessened, Helen Margaret took up work at Montgomery Wards and later at Neiman Marketing. A devoted White Sox fan, Helen spent many summer evenings rooting for the Sox with the family dog, Prince, loyally at her side.
Helen Margaret McClure O’Brien, always the optimist, found beauty in those around her. Thank you, goodbye and God bless you. A memorial service was held Wednesday, Dec. 15, at Beach Memorial Chapel in St. Pete Beach, Fla.
