Anna Baczek


Anna J. Baczek, nee Strombom, 80, of Lombard, died Wednesday, Dec. 23, at Elmhurst Memorial Hospital in Elmhurst.
Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 28, with prayers from Brust Funeral Home, 135 S. Main St., Lombard, to Mass at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Lombard. Interment was at Assumption Cemetery in Wheaton.
Mrs. Baczek is survived by her husband, John G.; children, Joan, Catherine A. (Waldemar) Gizella, Joseph John (Patricia) Liberty-Baczek and Janet A. (John) Tulley; six grandchildren; and nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her son, John Joseph; and sister, Lillian York.
Mrs. Baczek was a resident of Lombard for 50 years. She had worked at Art Karnatz Insurance Agency in Lombard. She retired from the Keebler Company, where she was employed for 26 years.

Eileen Cardascio

Eileen Cardascio, 63, of Lombard, died Friday, Jan. 1, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove.
Funeral services are being held today, Jan. 6, from Knollcrest Funeral Home, 1500 S. Meyers Road, Lombard, to Mass at Christ the King Catholic Church in Lombard, with the Rev. Peter Jarosz officiating. Interment is at Queen of Heaven Cemetery in Hillside.
Ms. Cardascio is survived by her sister, Roberta (Joseph) Dirschl. She was preceded in death by her parents, Albert J. and Carmella A. Cardascio.
Ms. Cardascio was a longtime Lombard resident and had worked as an administrative assistant at Zenith Electronics.

Lawrence Clark

Lawrence E. Clark, 71, of Westmont, formerly of Lombard, died Thursday, Dec. 24, at Edward Hospital in Naperville.
Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 28, at Trinity Lutheran Church in York Center. Interment was at Chapel Hill Gardens West Cemetery in Oakbrook Terrace.
Mr. Clark is survived by his children, Kenneth (Lisa) and Robert (Rita); stepchildren, Henry (Marilyn) DeVries of Oakbrook Terrace and Carole (David) Roon; 14 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and sister, Lynn Clark. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois J.
Mr. Clark received his MBA from Washington University in St. Louis and had worked as a real estate appraiser in commercial real estate for many years in the area.
Memorials to Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Roosevelt and Meyers Roads, Lombard, IL 60148, would be appreciated.

Joanne Detro

Joanne P. Detro, nee Plumery, 77, of Elmhurst, formerly of Lombard, died Saturday, Jan. 2, in Lombard.
A memorial visitation will be held Saturday, Jan. 9, at Brust Funeral Home, 135 S. Main St., Lombard. Inurnment is private at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery.
Mrs. Detro is survived by her husband, Clair D.; son, Dale (Diane); two grandchildren; brother, Charles (Eileen) Plumery; and nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Detro was retired after 30 years of service as a school teacher with Lombard Elementary School District 44, and was also a world traveler.

Franklin Ilcken

A memorial service for Franklin A. Ilcken Sr., of Villa Park, is being held today, Jan. 6, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Villa Park.
Mr. Ilcken is survived by his wife, Cheryl; son, Franklin A. Jr.; siblings, Archie, Phillip, Rick, Sylvia Herman, Sally Van Steenbergen, Enica Stewart and Rita Scagloine; and many nieces and nephews.
Arrangements were made by Steuerle Funeral Home, 350 S. Ardmore Ave., Villa Park.

Stella Jaworski

Stella M. Jaworski, nee Zakrzewski, 92, of Lombard, formerly of the Wicker Park area, died Friday, Dec. 25, in Lombard.
Funeral services were private at Brust Funeral Home, 135 S. Main St., Lombard. Interment was at St. Adalbert Cemetery.
Mrs. Jaworski is survived by her children, Geraldine Jones of Lombard, William and Catherine Lewandowski; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward M.; and son-in-law, Everett Jones.
Mrs. Jaworski had been a resident of Lombard since 1987. She was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church and also a member of the Janitors Union of Chicago for many years.

John Kelley

John Richard “Skeex” Kelley died Thursday, Dec. 3, in Omaha, Neb.
A memorial Mass was held Monday, Dec. 7, at St. Stephen the Martyr Church in Omaha. Interment was at Resurrection Cemetery in Omaha.
Mr. Kelley is survived by his children, Karen (Robert) Ridder, Timothy (Joan), Anna (Richard) Kania (formerly of Lombard) and Pamela (Harold) Williams; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Benjamin and Josephine; brother, Thomas W. Kelley; and wife of 62 years, Regene.
Mr. Kelley was born in Davenport, Iowa. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during World War II as a sergeant at the Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland, where he was in charge of electrical maintenance.
He retired from the electrical engineering and construction field of General Electric in 1982, after 30 years of service. His career with GE took the family to Madison, Wis., Elmhurst, and Lombard from 1967-85. In 1985 the Kelleys left Lombard to retire in Omaha and use it as a base for RV traveling. They were charter members of the Family Motor Coach Association (FMCA) and he was one of the founding members of the Heartland Travelers.

Virgil Lickteig

Virgil J. Lickteig, 89, of Lombard for 48 years, died Wednesday, Dec. 30.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Jan. 5, with prayers from Knollcrest Funeral Home, 1500 S. Meyers Road, Lombard, to Mass at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Lombard.
Mr. Lickteig is survived by his wife of 58 years, Agatha; children, Mark (Melissa), Carol, Beverly Loder, John, Laura (Ken) Novotny and James; four grandchildren; one great-grandson; siblings, Donald and Mildred Peine; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother, Robert.
Mr. Lickteig was born in Kansas, where he worked on the family farm until enlisting in the U.S. Navy. At one point during his service, he was stationed at Navy Pier in Chicago and decided to return to Chicago after the war to accept a job with Bowman Dairy Co. in 1946. He held a series of management positions with Bowman and with Dean Foods, which acquired the company, retiring in 1988 as a regional director of Baskin-Robbins for Dean Foods.
Active well into his 80s, Mr. Lickteig devoted much time to tending his glorious flower and vegetable gardens and helping with the planting and harvest on his son’s pumpkin farm.
Memorials to St. Pius X Catholic Church would be appreciated.

Sylvia Mitchell

Funeral services for Sylvia J. Mitchell, nee Kunes, of Bartlett, formerly of Villa Park, were held Monday, Dec. 28, at Resurrection Church. Interment was at Queen of Heaven Cemetery.
Mrs. Mitchell is survived by her children, Roger (Vivian) O’Donnell, Ron (Donna) O’Donnell, Michael (Cheryl Enger) O’Donnell and Marilyn (Ron) Hogstrom; mother-in-law of Kate and Susan; grandmother of 13; and great-grandmother of 15. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Francis O’Donnell and Joseph Mitchell; and daughter, Jeanne Beemer.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Salvation Army, WTTW Chicago or a charity of choice would be appreciated.

Theodore Nixon

Theodore D. “Ted” Nixon, 67, of Montgomery, formerly of Lombard, died Friday, Dec. 25, at Rush-Copley Medical Center in Aurora.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Dec. 30, with prayers from Brust Funeral Home, 135 S. Main St., Lombard, to Mass at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Lombard. Interment was at Queen of Heaven Cemetery in Hillside.
Mr. Nixon is survived by his wife, Frances M.; children, Darren (Carol), Tammy (John) deWaard, Anette and Julie; eight grandchildren; siblings, Jean (Donald) Domin and francis “Bud” (Diane); mother, Winifred Piechocki; and many nieces and nephews.
Mr. Nixon was a resident of Montgomery for five years and was formerly of Lombard for 35 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, and retired in 2001 from J.J. Collins after 35 years. He had coached softball and baseball teams for many years for the Lombard Park District.

Louise Rubel

Louise A. Rubel, nee Anderson, 90, of Lombard, formerly of Villa Park, died Monday, Dec. 28, at Beacon Hill Health Center in Lombard.
Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 4, at Trinity Lutheran Church, York Center, Lombard. Interment was at Irving Park Cemetery in Chicago.
Mrs. Rubel is survived by her husband, Harold C.; sons, John (Elaine), Robert (Linda) and William; four grandchildren; brother, David (Jane) Anderson; cousin, Valerie (Bob) Webber; and two nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Rubel was a resident of Lombard for nine years and was formerly of Villa Park for 48 years. She grew up on the North Side of Chicago and was a 1937 graduate of Von Steuben High School in Chicago. She had worked at Wieboldt’s in Yorktown Shopping Mall.
Mrs. Rubel was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, York Center, and a former member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Villa Park. She had been an election judge, a member of the Villa Park Women’s Club for over 40 years and a former den mother.

Nancy Wunchel

Nancy Carol Wunchel, 50, died Sunday, Dec. 27.
Funeral services were held Thursday, Dec. 31, at Our Lady of Mercy in Aurora.
Mrs. Wunchel is survived by her husband, Carl “Fuzzy”; mother, Elizabeth Dulak; son, Brian O.; siblings, Jim (Donna) Mancini, Marilyn (Steve) Barnhart and Connie Pritchard, in-laws, Carl and Elsa Wunchel, Tim and Debbie Lamb and Jim and Lorry Vasser; many nieces and nephews; and seven great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, Mario Mancini.
Mrs. Wunchel was employed for many years by U.S. Food Service, and was an active member of Our Lady of Mercy, where she enjoyed Bible study. She was an animal lover and devoted volunteer at the Naperville Area Humane Society.
