Cecilia Dockendorff


Cecilia Dockendorff, 101, of Spring Valley, Ill., formerly of Lombard, died Monday, June 7, at the Spring Valley Nursing Center.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Friday, June 11, at Sacred Heart Church in Lombard. Burial was at Assumption Cemetery in Wheaton.
Mrs. Dockendorff is survived by her daughter, Victoria (Gregg) Pettit; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Victor, whom she married in 1940; and one sister and two brothers.
Mrs. Dockendorff was born in Lombard to Fred and Mary Maas. She was a homemaker and member of Sacred Heart Church.
Memorials to the American Cancer Society or Masses would be appreciated.

Barbara Howes

Visitation and funeral services for Barbara L. Howes, nee Kief, 77, of Lombard, formerly of Port Charlotte, Fla., and Villa Park, will be held Saturday, June 19, at Brust Funeral Home, 135 S. Main St., Lombard. Interment is private.
Mrs. Howes is survived by her children, William E. Jr. of Lombard and Bonny (Aaron) Glidewell of Lombard; seven grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
Mrs. Howes had been a resident of Florida for 18 years and was a resident of Villa Park from 1959-75.

Lois Martin

Lois D. Martin, nee Deicke, 78, of Johnson City, Tenn., died Sunday, June 13, at the Johnson City Medical Center.
A Celebration of Life memorial service will be held on June 27 at the Carnegie Hotel in Johnson City, with the Rev. Bedford Transou officiating.
Mrs. Martin is survived by her children, Lisa (Dr. Richard) Rolen and Edwin (Mary) Martin; two granddaughters; and many cousins in Illinois. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis; and parents, Edwin and Alma Deicke.
Mrs. Martin was a native of Lombard and was descended from one of the oldest families in DuPage County; her parents, grandparents and great-grandparents all resided in DuPage County. Her father was a well-known civic leader, businessman in Lombard and Wheaton, and a former village president in Lombard. She graduated from St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran School and Glenbard High School.
She received a B.A. degree from the University of Michigan and an M.A. from Stanford University in California, and was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority and Pi Delta Kappa teaching fraternity. She lived overseas for most of her life, first as a member of the Experiment in International Living, then as an exchange student in Germany; and later accompanied her husband to Columbia and Libya, where he was employed as a micropaleontologist and petroleum geologist for Chevron Oil Co. A love of people and an interest in different cultures led her and her family to travel extensively in Africa and Europe while living in Libya for 14 years.
As a teacher by profession, Mrs. Martin also taught in California, Libya, Switzerland, Germany and Italy, and after retiring from her position as a German and Spanish teacher with the U.S. Department of Defense in Naples, Italy, she bought a centuries-old Italian farmhouse on the Tuscan-Umbrian border in Italy. She turned it into a bed and breakfast where she enjoyed showing her guests the local sights and where many of her visitors became good friends.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the East Tennessee State University (ETSU) Don Sundquist Center of Excellence in Paleontology would be appreciated.

Jeanette Masden

Jeanette Marie Masden, nee Strasser, 99, of Elmhurst, formerly of Lombard and Chicago, died Thursday, June 10, at Lexington Health Care in Elmhurst.
Funeral services were held Monday, June 14, at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lombard. Interment was at Woodlawn Cemetery in Forest Park.
Mrs. Masden is survived by her children, James Albert Sr. and Patricia J. Knueppel of Villa Park; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and many other relatives. She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert; daughter-in-law, Elizabeth; and son-in-law, Howard Knueppel.
Mrs. Masden lived in Chicago for 86 years and was of Lombard, Elmhurst and Oak Brook for the last 13 years. She was a longtime member of Grace Lutheran Church in Chicago and was currently a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Lombard. She had retired as a supervisor from Lowry Organ Manufacturing Co. She loved to dance.

Edward Pieszchala

Edward C. Pieszchala, almost 90, died Wednesday, June 9, in Elmhurst.
Funeral services were held Saturday, June 12, with prayers from Brust Funeral Home, 135 S. Main St., Lombard, to Mass at Visitation Church in Elmhurst. Interment was at Resurrection Cemetery in Justice.
Mr. Pieszchala is survived by his fiancée, Joan Allegretti; children, Joyce (Gene) Trzupek of Villa Park and Edward J. (Joyce); six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and many other family and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Helen.
Mr. Pieszchala had moved to Lombard in 1985 and was formerly of Chicago. He had attended St. Francis of Assisi in Chicago and was a 1938 graduate of Harrison High School. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, having served during World War II, and had worked for Savage Brothers in Elk Grove for nine years as a tool and die maker. He was a member of VFW Post #2801 in Villa Park and of Sacred Heart Church in Lombard.

Avice Rodda

Funeral services for Avice Belle Rodda, nee Young, 92, of Villa Park, were held Tuesday, June 15, at Calvary United Methodist Church in Villa Park. Interment was private.
Mrs. Rodda is survived by her children, Avice M. and Dorinda (Richard) Ringhofer; two granddaughters; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas A.

Lorena Scholz

Lorena M. Scholz, nee Gokey, 80, of Hot Springs Village, Ark., formerly of Chicago, died Sunday, June 13, at Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge.
Visitation will be held Thursday, June 17, at Brust Funeral Home, 135 S. Main St., Lombard.
Funeral services will be held Friday, June 18, at the funeral home. Interment is at Elm Lawn Cemetery in Elmhurst.
Mrs. Scholz is survived by her husband, Edward R.; sons, William (Lori), Robert (Mary) of Lombard and Daniel (Dannielle); six grandchildren; siblings, Ordie Boss, Catherine (Jay) Bright, John (Patricia) Gokey and Rolland Gokey; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her son, David; and five brothers and sisters.

Byron Settles

Byron G. “Buzz” Settles, 69, of Nineveh, Ind., died Saturday, June 5, after a four-year battle with medullary thyroid carcinoma.
Funeral services were held Friday, June 11, at the Cordry Sweetwater Clubhouse in Nineveh.
Mr. Settles is survived by his wife, Georgene; children, Tracy (Mike) Zeckmeister, Timothy (Paige Robbins), Scott (Julie) of Lombard, Michael (Lesley) and Krista; siblings, twin sister Barbara Danyluk, Joyce Ann McEvers, Sue Vinyard, Ronnie Settles and Billy Settles; and 10 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Ada Settles; and brother, Gary Settles.
Mr. Settles was born in White Hall, Ill., and was retired from GTE. He was an active volunteer within his community and took great joy in helping others. His greatest enjoyment was spending as much time as he could with his wife, children, grandchildren and friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to a charity of choice would be appreciated.

Mary Sims

Mary J. Sims, nee Mahn, 89, of Lombard, died Wednesday, June 9, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove.
Funeral services were held Monday, June 14, at Knollcrest Funeral Home, 1500 S. Meyers Road, Lombard. Interment was at Wheaton Cemetery.
Mrs. Sims is survived by her children, Christine (Paul) Dehnert, Carol (William) Mahler, William (Mary Lynn), Catherine (Robert) Wrzosek and Patricia (James) Gorski; 14 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and brother, Charles (Mary). She was preceded in death by her husband, Gordon W.; and brother, George (Barbara) Mahn.
Mrs. Sims was a longtime resident of Lombard. She was a homemaker and a longtime member of Grace Baptist Church in Lombard.

Deborah Stanley

Deborah H. Stanley, nee Ball, 57, of Lombard, died Friday, June 11, in Downers Grove.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 15, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lombard, with the Rev. Patrick Boomhower officiating. Interment was at Woodlawn Cemetery.
Mrs. Stanley is survived by her husband, Scott; children, Ryan (fiancée Cassandra Prodzenski), Erin and Patrick; one grandchild; siblings, Charles (Pam) Ball and Barbara Jones; many nieces and nephews; and father- and mother-in-law, Weldon and Lorraine Stanley.
Mrs. Stanley had worked as a dispatcher in transportation, and was a devoted White Sox fan.

Mary Wherley

Mary K. “Katie” Wherley, of Lombard, died Sunday, June 13.
Visitation will be held today, June 16, at Steuerle Funeral Home, 350 S. Ardmore Ave., Villa Park.
Funeral services are being held Thursday, June 17, with prayers from the funeral home to Mass at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church in Villa Park. Interment is at Queen of Heaven Cemetery.
Mrs. Wherley is survived by her husband, Richard T.; son, Timothy John; mother, Luella Marron; siblings, Maureen (Ron) Hoger, Don Marron, Elaine (John) Minniti, Bruce (Cathie) Marron and Sharon (Dan) Pike; 13 nieces and nephews; and three great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, Donald Marron.
