Master Sgt. Matthew Falat

U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Matthew James Thomas Falat, 35, died in the line of duty Sept. 25, 2011, in San Antonio, Texas.
A memorial service will be held Friday, Dec. 30, at St. Francis Catholic Church, 303 S. Poplar, Carbondale, with visitation at 5 p.m. followed by the service at 6:30.
Master Sgt. Falat is survived by his parents, Richard and Linda Falat of Carbondale, formerly of Villa Park; wife, Lisa; children, Hailey, Andrew and Rachel; and siblings, Amanda Kate Falat, Mary Fran Jarvis and Mitchell Andrew. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Joseph and Frances Schwappach Falat, and Howard and Marion Gustaveson of Villa Park.
Master Sgt. Falat was born in Elmhurst and was an Eagle Scout. After graduating from Carbondale High School in 1994, he entered the U.S. Air Force, where he worked as a cardiopulmonary technician. His duties included being a special projects director for respiratory therapy in a neonatal intensive care unit and managing a cardiac catheter lab; he was also a member of the elite Critical Care Air Transport Team (CCATT).
He served in many theaters around the world and was credited for having saved the lives of countless critical respiratory patients after redesigning a control valve on a piece of medical equipment. It is now known as the “Falat valve.” He distinguished himself through his meritorious service for which he received several medals during his 17 years as a cardiopulmonary technician, and was nicknamed “MacGyver of the Air Force” for his ability to think on his feet and solve unusual problems.

Edward Hauser

Edward J. Hauser, 98, of Elmhurst, formerly of Villa Park, died Tuesday, Dec. 27, at Lexington Health Care in Elmhurst.

Conrad Lind

Conrad J. Lind, 82, died Saturday, Dec. 17.
Visitation and funeral services are being held today, Dec. 28, at the St. Alexander Church gathering space in Villa Park. Interment is private.
Mr. Lind is survived by his wife, Constance “Connie”; stepchildren, Judi (Mac) Gretz, Kathy (Steve) Kreiter and Peggy (Jim) Zirko; three grandchildren; and canine companion, Daisy. He was preceded in death by his stepdaughter, Cynthia Taylor.
Mr. Lind was a veteran of the U.S. Army during the Korean War, and had worked as a civilian employee with the Army Corps of Engineers, retiring after 30 years. He was a member of the Villa Park VFW Post #2801, was a good bowler and was a fan of all Chicago sports teams.

Jane Turney

Funeral services for Jane “Chris” Turney, 60, of Bolingbrook, were held Monday, Dec. 26, at Brust Funeral Home, 135 S. Main St., Lombard. Interment was private at Grove Hill Cemetery, Morrison, Ill.
Ms. Turney was the loving life partner of James C. Keating; dearest sister of Judith (Donald) Goldsmith and Linda (Nettie Sabin) Turney; dear aunt of Robert, Jeffrey and Mark Goldsmith; and special friend of Darlene (Daniel) Patulski.
Christine grew up in Sandwich, Ill., and graduated from both Illinois Wesleyan University and Roosevelt University. Upon graduation, she began teaching music classes in Lyons, Ill. She then moved on to teaching at Lombard Junior High School in Lombard and then junior high music and chorus in Northbrook, before spending the last 20 years of her career in Skokie School District 69, Lincoln Junior High.
She was quite involved in the Illinois Education Association. She was president of the Skokie-Morton Grove Education Association, was the Region 36 Chair of the IEA, and eventually became an Illinois Education Association (NEA) state director. After retiring from her teaching career, she became the president of the DuPage Chapter of the Illinois Retired Teacher’s Association, serving from 2008 until December, 2011. She also taught music at the Allegro Studios in Lemont, Ill.
Chris was an accomplished vocalist and musician playing, piano, guitar, and the flute. She was also a gourmet cook and talented jewelry maker.

Arthur Vogel

Arthur E. Vogel, 87, of Lombard, died Tuesday, Dec. 20, in Lombard.
Interment was private at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood.
Mr. Vogel is survived by his wife of 46 years, Joan; children, Patty (Jim) Kaspar and Jim (Nicole); and two grandchildren.
Mr. Vogel grew up in Chicago and graduated from West Leyden Township High School. He then joined the U.S. Army during World War II, serving in the Philippines and France. When he returned home he went to work with Illinois Bell and retired with 35-plus years.
