Mary Kate Gallagher

Mary Kate Gallagher, 69, of Lombard, died Sunday, July 1, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove.
Visitation will be held Thursday, July 5, at Brust Funeral Home, 135 S. Main St., Lombard.
Funeral services will be held Friday, July 6, with prayers from the funeral home to Mass at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Interment is private at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Evergreen Park.
Ms. Gallagher is survived by her brothers, Michael (Susan) and Patrick T. (Ellen); sister-in-law, Sharon Gallagher; and seven nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Catherine Gallagher; and brothers, James and John.
Ms. Gallagher was a resident of Lombard since 1973. She was a Catholic school teacher for 44 years and taught the last 15 of those years at St. Constance School in Chicago. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Lombard.

Helen Payer

Helen Marie Payer, nee Simon, 83, of Lombard, died Thursday, June 28, after a year-long battle with leukemia.
Funeral services were held Monday, July 2, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lombard, with the Rev. Patrick Boomhower officiating. Interment was at Chapel Hill Gardens Cemetery.
Mrs. Payer is survived by her husband of 61 years, Edward; children, Karen (Harlan) Schmidt, Susan (Joseph III) Fumo and Edward; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; sister, Pauline (Walter) Wohlrab; sister-in-law, Rebecca Simon; and one niece. She was preceded in death by her siblings, Albert and Joseph Simon, Theresa (the late Eugene) Daniels and Frieda Simon; sister-in-law, Theresa (the late Conrad); and brother-in-law, Walter (the late Dorothy) Payer.
Mrs. Payer was raised on the South Side of Chicago and graduated from Englewood High School. She had resided in Lombard for the last 48 years and was a longtime volunteer for the hot lunch program at Trinity Lutheran School.
In lieu of flowers, memorials to Trinity Lutheran Church or School would be appreciated.

John Ranaghan

John J. Ranaghan, 82, of Lombard, died Thursday, June 28, at Manorcare of Westmont.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 3, at St. Alexander Church Gathering Space in Villa Park. Interment was at Queen of Heaven Cemetery in Hillside.
Mr. Ranaghan is survived by his sister-in-law, Joanne Ranaghan; five nieces and nephews and many others; and brother-in-law, John (Catherine) Sewell of Villa Park. He was preceded in death by his wife, Rose Marie; and brother, William L.
Mr. Ranaghan was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in Germany during the Korean War as an M.P.

Walter Schwalb

Walter L. Schwalb, 93, of Chicago, formerly of Lombard, died Friday, June 29, in Chicago.
Funeral services were held Monday, July 2, with prayers from Brust Funeral Home, 135 S. Main St., Lombard, to Mass at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Lombard. Interment was at Assumption Cemetery in Winfield.
Mr. Schwalb is survived by his wife of 67 years, Lametta; children, Becky (Bill) Gibbons, Jennifer (Lee) Lindsey, Marina (John) Lear, Meredith (Howard) Polirer and Bob; daughter-in-law, Nancy; son-in-law, Dan Orlik; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his son, Denny; daughter, Janine Orlik; and brother, Arthur.
Mr. Schwalb was a resident of Lombard for 57 years and of Chicago this past year. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and had attended Concordia University in River Forest. He had been a purchasing agent at Stebbins Hardware for 40 years, was a former member of the American Legion and was a life member of Celebration of Life.

Irl Scott

Irl F. Scott, 93, formerly of Lombard, died Thursday, June 28, in Florida.
Visitation and funeral services will be held Thursday, July 5, at Brust Funeral Home, 135 S. Main St., Lombard. Interment is private at Chapel Hill Gardens West Cemetery.
Mr. Scott is survived by his children, Robert (Astrid), Clifford (Anna) and Eileen (Donald) Vacker; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Doreen, whom he married in 1942; parents, Arthur and Hattie; and siblings, Olive, Hazel, Virginia and Jewel.
Mr. Scott retired after 22 years working as a buyer for International Harvester, and he had also worked as a security guard at Ovaltine in Villa Park and for Bell Labs. He loved to build and fly radio-controlled model airplanes, loved to build clocks and enjoyed fishing and gardening.

James Trotta

James J. Trotta, 96, of Lombard, died Saturday, June 30, in Downers Grove.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 3, with prayers from Knollcrest Funeral Home, 1500 S. Meyers Road, Lombard, to Mass at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Lombard, with the Rev. George Zieba officiating. Entombment was at Queen of Heaven Cemetery.
Mr. Trotta survived by his wife, Gloria; daughter, Jane; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Joseph, Jeff, Pete, Leonard, John, Rose Ruggiero and Ann Girardi.
Mr. Trotta was a longtime resident of Lombard and was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Force. He had worked as a purchaser for a manufacturing company, coached the Girls Lassie League Softball team in Lombard and was an avid hunter, fisherman, gardener, sports fan and fan of the opera.

Marie Nelson Zawacki

Marie Zawacki, age 94, of Mankato, Minn., formerly of Lombard, Ill., died on Wednesday, June 27, 2012, at Laurel’s Peak. 
A funeral service was held Monday, July 2, at Mt. Olive Lutheran Church, with the Rev. John Petersen officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Lombard.   
She is survived by her daughter, Linda Loge of Mankato; two grandchildren, Lorelee Loge Hood (Philip) of Jacksonville, Ill., and Eric Loren Loge (Sally) of Fort Meade, Md.; and five great-grandchildren, Lauren, Elin, Jack, Alex, and Conner. She was preceded in death by her husband and son-in-law, Loren.
Marie was born on Jan. 31, 1918, in Escanaba, Mich., to John and Anna Nelson. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran church. Marie was united in marriage to Edward Zawacki in 1949. 
Mankato Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. Memorials are preferred to Mt. Olive Lutheran Church or Bethany Lutheran College.

Clarence Zelinski

Clarence J. “Cook” Zelinski, 95, died Sunday, July 1.
There will be a private family gathering only.
Mr. Zelinski is survived by his nieces and nephews, and grand- and great-grand-nieces and great-grand-nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mable; parents, Marie and Jacob Zelinski; and siblings, Leon, Edward, Bernard, Myron, Rose Zilka and Irene Sullivan.
“Cook,” as he was known to family and friends, was born Nov. 23, 1916, in Berwyn, and was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during World War II in the Panama Canal Zone. He and Mable moved to Lombard, where he spent the majority of his adult years. After his wife’s passing, he then spent the last nine years at the Concord Retirement Center in Northlake, where he was a much-loved community activist. He was a former member of St. Pius X Church in Lombard.
