Anita Balik

A memorial service for Anita Balik, 96, of Lombard, formerly of Ocala, Fla., was held Sunday, Jan. 6, at Steuerle Funeral Home, 350 S. Ardmore Ave., Villa Park.
Mrs. Balik is survived by her daughter, Chrissie Frey; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and brother, William (Jean) Figura. She was preceded in death by her husband, George; siblings, Nancy (Dick) Doman, Joseph (Mary) Figura, Michael (Dolores) Figura and Kay (Len) Sargent.

Romeo Buenafe

Romeo N. Buenafe, 72, of Aurora, formerly of Lombard, died Friday, Dec. 28, in Aurora.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 5, from Knollcrest Funeral Home, 1500 S. Meyers Road, Lombard, to Mass at Christ the King Catholic Church in Lombard, with the Rev. Peter Jarosz officiating. Interment was at Queen of Heaven Cemetery.
Mr. Buenafe is survived by his wife, Rita; children, Rainier (Marissa), Ritche (Nicole) and Raymond; four grandchildren; siblings, Helen Gomez, Lilia Robles, Renato Buenafe and Isidro Buenafe Jr.; and many nieces and nephews.
Mr. Buenafe was born in Batangas, Philippines, and had worked as an underwriter in the insurance industry. He was a member of the San Pedronians Prayer Group.

James Fiebrandt

James E. Fiebrandt, 82, of Winfield, formerly of Lombard and Elmhurst, died Tuesday, Jan. 1, at Central DuPage Hospital.
Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 7, at Brust Funeral Home, 135 S. Main St., Lombard. Interment was at Elm Lawn Cemetery in Elmhurst.
Mr. Fiebrandt is survived by his children, Karen (Dan) Liddicoatt, James R. (Bonnie) of Lombard and Sandy (Bruce) Hootman; seven grandchildren; brother, Robert (Loretta) Fiebrandt; and sister-in-law, Mary (Daniel) Czubak. He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Katherine A.
Mr. Fiebrandt was born in Elmhurst and was a 1948 graduate of York High School. He worked for Fiebrandt Heating and founded White Pine Cupola & Heating, which he owned from 1959-93. He lived in Lombard for 39 years and Winfield for six years. He was an avid camper and was a member of Sunshine Camp & Company Club.

Lorraine Hohler

Funeral services for Lorraine T. Hohler, 84, of Villa Park, were held Saturday, Jan. 5, at St. Alexander Church Gathering Space in Villa Park. Interment was at Queen of Heaven Cemetery.
Mrs. Hohler is survived by her children, Irene (Dennis) Fograse, Peggy (Bill) Wesolowski and Lynn (Frank) Foley; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward R.; and siblings, Virginia (Arthur) Kozakiewicz, Rita (Bud) Steeves and James (Pat) Gallagher.

Kenneth Nance

Funeral services for Kenneth W. Nance, 63, of Villa Park, were held Wednesday, Jan. 2, at Steuerle Funeral Home, 350 S. Ardmore Ave., Villa Park. Interment was private.
Mr. Nance is survived by his wife, Carol; children, Angel and Corri (Wayne) Maurer; five grandchildren; mother, Florence; brothers, Thomas and George (Nancy) Nance; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, William Nance.

Visitation for Frank M. O'Connell, age 96, of Lombard, will be held Thursday, Jan.10, at Brust Funeral Home, 135 S. Main St., Lombard. Funeral services will be held Friday, Jan. 11, with prayers from the funeral home to Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Lombard. Interment is private.

Karen Olson

Karen Sue “Mimi” Olson, nee Meyers, 71, of Lombard, died peacefully Thursday, Jan. 3, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, surrounded by her loving family.
A celebration of life and service was held Monday, Jan. 7, at Brust Funeral Home, 135 S. Main St., Lombard. Interment was at Mount Emblem Cemetery in Elmhurst.
Mrs. Olson is survived by her children, Ronald Jr. (Karla) and Julie; four grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and brother, Richard (Susan) Meyers. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ronald Sr.; and parents, George and Sarah “Sadie” Meyers.
Mrs. Olson was a longtime resident of Lombard. She was an avid follower of Christ and the epitome of a “people person,” as she could talk to anyone for hours at a time. Her happiest moments were when she was surrounded by her cherished family.

Sarah Pantano

Sarah M. Pantano, 98, formerly of Lombard and Villa Park, died Thursday, Jan. 3, at the DuPage County Convalescent Center in Wheaton.
Visitation and funeral services are being held today, Jan. 9, at St. Alexander Church Gathering Space in Villa Park. Interment is at Mt. Carmel Cemetery.
Ms. Pantano is survived by five nieces and nephews; and four generations of great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, Guiseppe and Dominica Pantano; and siblings, Russell (Josephine Affronti) Pantano, Frances (Michael) Genovise, Rose (Charles) Affronti, Joseph Pantano, Anthony Pantano, Samuel (Susan Stroh) Pantano and Michael (Marge Schmalz) Pantano.
Mrs. Pantano was born in Chicago to immigrant parents. She loved Chicago, working many years at V L&A, better known as Abercrombie & Fitch, and for a time at Rosenbloom & Associates in the Wrigley Building. She also worked for DuPage County at the treasurer’s office, circuit court clerk’s office, child support division and sheriff’s office warrant division.
She had a lifelong devotion to her faith and family. She had an infectious smile, always giving more than she took. She loved growing and drying flowers and herbs, winning many contests she had entered.
Mrs. Pantano loved history and spent time volunteering with the Lombard Historical Society, sharing her knowledge of herbs, flowers and their true essential oils, and the preparation and serving of “High Tea.”

Peter Ploegman

Peter Robert Ploegman, 92, a longtime resident of Lombard, died Friday, Jan. 4, in Downers Grove.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Jan. 8, at Knollcrest Funeral Home, 1500 S. Meyers Road, Lombard, with the Rev. Sam Hamstra officiating. Interment was at Chapel Hill Gardens West Cemetery.
Mr. Ploegman is survived by his children, Peter F. (Janice) Ploegman, Debbie (the Rev. Sam) Hamstra and Laurie (Ted) Vander Naald; grandchildren, Peter C. (Emily), Stephen and Kristina Ploegman, Karrie (Brandon) Wright, Samuel (Taylor), Mark (Sandra) and David (fiancée Fabi Desouza) Hamstra, Rebecca (Spencer) Anderson, Brittany and Justin Vander Naald; great-grandchildren, Timothy, Tyce and Cade; siblings, Dorathy Bossenga, Edwin Ploegman and Mae Bolt; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dolores, nee Hultquist; and brother, Fred Ploegman.
Mr. Ploegman was born in Cicero and was the owner of a moving and storage company. He was a lifelong member of the First Reformed Church of Berwyn.

Paul Putong

Paul C. Putong of Lombard died Friday, Jan. 4, at Good Samaritan Hospital.
A visitation was held Tuesday, Jan. 8, at Brust Funeral Home, 135 S. Main St., Lombard. Interment was private.
Mr. Putong is survived by his wife, Dorrie; children, Paul Andrew and Nicole Marie; mother, Betty; and siblings, Jim (Chris) and Felicia. He was preceded in death by his father, Dr. Paul Putong.

Myrtle Stark

Myrtle Stark, nee Schmidt, age 94, of Michigan, formerly of Lombard, died Friday, Jan. 4, in Michigan.
 Visitation and funeral services will be held Thursday, Jan. 10, at Brust Funeral Home, 135 S. Main St., Lombard. Interment will be at Chapel Hill Gardens West, Oakbrook Terrace.
Mrs. Stark is survived by her son, Donald; her sister, Joan Luessen; and many nieces and nephews, including Darlene (Buzz) Calvert of Niles, Mich., formerly of Lombard. Mrs. Stark was preceded in death by her husband, Richard S. Stark; brother, “Bud” Joseph Schmidt; and her sister, Evelyn Tilock.
 Mrs. Stark was a longtime resident of Lombard and had been a resident of Michigan for eight years.  She was a former member of Trinity Lutheran Church, York Center in Lombard, and also Grace Lutheran Church in Glen Ellyn. Mrs. Stark was the former head of key punch operations at American Screw Company. She liked to crochet, knit and do crafts.
