Margaret Burke and Dr. Richard Burke

After seventy years of marriage, Dr. and Mrs. Richard and Margaret Burke died within four days of each other.
Residents of Lombard for over 67 years, Dr. and Mrs. Burke are survived by six children, eight grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
Dr. Burke, or Dick to his family and friends, was born on April 26, 1915, to Edward and Mary Ellen (Fitzgerald) Burke of the Manor Park neighborhood in Chicago. He was the youngest of four boys, Gerald, Edward Jr., and William; followed by a younger sister Elizabeth (Betty).
Dick attended St. Columbanus Grade School and graduated from Mount Carmel High School.  He went on to Loyola University where he earned his degree in dentistry. During World War II, he joined the United States Army and was stationed in Fort Hood, Texas, in the Dental Corps.
Mrs. Burke, or Peg to her family and friends, was born in 1920 on the South Side of Chicago to Walter and Margaret (Ronan) Kelleher. Peg's siblings included Walter Jr., Ruth, and her beloved younger brother John (Jack).
Peg attended St. Xavier School, followed by the Chicago Teacher's College and later Loyola University for graduate school.
The couple met through Peg's friendship with Dick’s younger sister Betty. Peg was a classmate and close friend of Betty’s, and always harbored a crush on her friend’s older brother. After Dick asked Peg to a Glee Club dance, the two began their relationship. Dick proposed to Peg on New Year’s Eve in Dallas, Texas, in 1942. The two were married on September 11th, 1943.
After World War II, the Burkes purchased a home on Brewster Street in Lombard. That same year, Dick opened his dental practice on Crescent Avenue in Glen Ellyn. The couple and their family, including children Maureen (Adams), Kathleen (Gibney), Margaret (Fogelman), Patricia (O’Connor), Richard and Timothy, later resided on Charlotte Street in Lombard.
Dick and Peg enjoyed every summer at their home, “the Front Cottage,” on Dewey Lake near Dowagiac, Michigan. They were parishioners of Sacred Heart Church for over 65 years. The couple traveled extensively, were patrons of several charities, including the Deicke Home of Lombard, and Dick was a lifelong, patient Cubs fan.
Dick and Peggy were the cherished aunt and uncle to countless nieces and nephews; and dearly loved by sons-in-law Dick Gibney and the late A. Martin Adams.
In September of 2013, the couple celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. Dick and Peggy Burke are an example of inseparable marriage, friendship and family. They will be missed by too many to name.
Memorial visitation will be held Wednesday, April 23, from 3- 8 p.m. at Brust Funeral Home (135 S. Main St., Lombard). The funeral mass will be held at Sacred Heart Church (114 S. Elizabeth St., Lombard) on Thursday, April 24, at 10 a.m.
