Lewis John Craft

Lewis John Craft, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend, died peacefully at home in Villa Park, Ill., on Dec. 23, 2013. John lived 86 years as a God serving man, devoted to his loving wife Clara, seven children, 19 grandchildren, and one great- grandchild.
Known as John, he was born to Mamie Elizabeth (Anderson) and Lewis John Craft Sr., of Clayton Ill., on Feb. 24, 1927. He was raised on the family farm with two brothers and four sisters: Clarence, Lawrence, Irma, Emma Lee, Zelma Marie and Veta Mae. Emma Lee resides in California and his parents and other siblings will be welcoming him home in heaven.
He graduated from the University of Illinois with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, a B.S. in Electrical Engineering, and an M.S. in Engineering. It was there that John met and courted the love of his life of 64 years, Clara. They wed Sept. 4, 1949, and moved to the Villa Park, Ill., area where they worked, served their community and church and raised seven children.
John was employed at Sunbeam Corporation for 28 years retiring as Manager of Motor Development, where he oversaw development and manufacturing of products, including the kitchen mixer, blender and electric razors.
In addition to his passion for engineering, John was also passionate about the law. John graduated in 1964 with his Juris Doctor from Kent School of Law. John opened a general practice law firm with Clara’s help, who worked alongside him for 30 years. As an attorney in his community he provided legal guidance to many clients who trusted his honest and fair approach.
His professional life was not the only place where John made an impact. Dedicated to the idea that one should live life as an example to others, John was active in the community his entire life. He served 12 years (eight as president) on the Salt Creek District 48 school board, was a charter member and member for more than 50 years of the Christian Church of Villa Park, he helped in the development of the Oakbrook Terrace volunteer Fire Department, was a member of the Beacon Hill Retirement Community Advisory Council, served as an arbitrator for the courts, also a former member of Villa Park Kiwanis, Villa Park Chamber of Commerce and Villa Park Masonic Lodge.
As dedicated as John was to the community, there was never a man more dedicated to his family. In addition to being a stable patriarch, John taught his children and grandchildren the importance of education, hard work, and living a Christian life. He ensured his legacy by supporting his children and grandchildren in their academic pursuits, for which they are forever grateful. John also left his family with many wonderful bonding times and memories of large family vacations to Disney World, Disney Land, Hawaii, the Mediterranean and multiple other locations around the United States.
John is survived by his wife, Clara; and his children, Phyllis (Robert) Habib, Ruth (John) Martin, Ellen (Lewis) Phillips, Beth Morgan, Carl (Dawn), Donna (David) Cain and Don (Janice).
