Thomas Loconti

Family and friends of Thomas “Plainwhite Tom” Loconti, 31, of Chicago, Ill., mourn the passing of the beloved artist, performer and humanitarian, who died on Thursday, Jan. 2, 2014.
Loconti was born in Rantoul, Ill., on April 26, 1982, to Mary Mendralla and Thomas Dennis.
He was raised by Mary and Scott Loconti. Loconti graduated from Lombard’s Glenbard East High School in 2000 and, after serving in the U.S. Air Force for four years, attended College of DuPage, where he studied philosophy. Most of Loconti’s accomplishments came outside of the realm of school and government.
An avid dancer and performer from an early age, Loconti became an integral part of the dance scene in Chicago as a dancer, DJ, event organizer and MC. He was also a gifted street and festival performer.
As a street poet, Loconti captivated strangers by asking them to give him three words around which he’d base a poem about them on the spot. He also mentored young aspiring dancers and was a proponent of random acts of kindness—giving flowers to unsuspecting women on the street or CTA and telling them they are beautiful. Tom was profiled in the Chicago Reader in 2012. He will be terribly missed by his family and the Chicago dance community.
Tom is survived by his mother, Mary, and her husband, Doug; his dad, Scott Loconti; siblings; Sarah (Mike) Kelly, Scott Loconti Jr. and Frank Loconti; nephew. Colin Loconti; and stepsisters, Devan Mendralla, Kelsey Mendralla and Alaina Mendralla.
He is also survived by his biological father, Thomas (Bridget) Dennis; siblings, Kyle and Sarah Dennis; his grandmother Eleanor; many aunts, uncles, cousins; and by hundreds of dancers, poets and artists from all over the United States with whom he shared the spotlight.
Services will be held on Friday, Jan. 17, 2014, with visitation from 5:30-9 p.m. and a celebration of his life from 7:30-9 p.m. at the Lombard Community Building, 433 St. Charles Road.
