Philip S. Palya

Philip S. Palya, age 74, of Hayward, Wis., passed away on Thursday, June 19, 2014, in Hayward.
Philip Stephen Palya was born Feb. 14, 1940, in Sussex, England, the son of Robert and Olive (Marshall) Palya. He was raised in Chicago, Ill., and studied to become a millwright. His work as a millwright was installing conveyers for manufacturing and shipping companies throughout the United States. Philip was joined in marriage to Victoria Nilsen on May 12, 1987, in Stevens Point, Wis. Together they called Lombard, Ill., home until moving to Hayward, Wis., where they purchased Dow’s Corner Store. From 1989 until 2006 Philip and Vickie operated the store and eventually changed it into a tavern.
Philip is survived by his wife, Vickie; four children, Lynne (Glenn) Daniels, of Richmond, Ill., John Palya of Henderson, Nev., Allison Palya of Henderson, Nev., Michael (Christine) Palya of Richmond, Ill.; 12 grandchildren; several great- grandchildren; four sisters, Meredith (Jock Hovey) Gauthier, Sandra Dee Harrison, Penny (Jack) Cecconi, Cathy Richard; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Palya; mother, Olive Gauthier, and one grandson, Matthew Palya.
A memorial service for Philip was held Monday, June 23, at First Congregational Church in Hayward, with Pastor Tim Hagberg officiating. Music was provided by Annette Hagberg.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Regional Hospice or the Humane Society.

George Baldwin

George H. Baldwin, 68, of Villa Park, died Friday, June 27 in Villa Park.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 1, at Brust Villa Park Funeral Home, 305 S. Princeton. Interment was private at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, Elwood.
Mr. Baldwin is survived by his wife, Kathleen V.; children, Kevin of Villa Park, Jonathan (Robin) and Kristy (Kirk) Bankson; two grandchildren; siblings, Margaret Cairns, Kathy (Robert) Coop, Suzanne (Danny), Thomas (Vivian) and Richard (Debbie); sister-in-law, Cheryl; was the uncle and great-uncle of many; and was godfather to Michele Homyak and Michael Baldwin. He was preceded in death by his brothers, David and Patrick; sister-in-law, Ethe; and brother-in-law, Ronald Cairns.
Mr. Baldwin was a U.S. Army veteran and served during the Vietnam War. He was a resident of Villa Park for 37 years.

Thomas F. Davis

Funeral services for Thomas F. Davis, 86, of Villa Park, will be held today, July 2, at Steuerle Funeral Home, 350 S. Ardmore Ave., Villa Park. Interment is at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood.
Mr. Davis was the husband of Margaret; father of Robert (Beverly), Barbara Gerhardt and the late Michael Davis; grandfather of four; and brother of Donald (Jackie) Davis.
Mr. Davis was a World War II Marine veteran and Korean Army veteran, and was a former member of the Villa Park Zoning and Planning Commission for over 20 years.

Catherine A. Dlugopolski

Catherine A. Dlugopolski, nee Plandowski, 75, of Lombard, died Thursday, June 26 in Lombard.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 1, with prayers from Brust Funeral Home, 135 S. Main St., Lombard, to Mass at Christ the King Church, Lombard. Interment was private at Queen of Heaven, Hillside.
Mrs. Dlugopolski is survived by her daughters, Julie (Benjamin Volpe) Dlugopolski of Lombard and Karen (Scott) Cebula; one grandson; siblings, Dorothy Polito and Alfred “Freddie” (Connie) Plandowski; many nieces and nephews; and many friends and grandchildren of her heart. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph J.; and brothers and sisters, Stanley, Theodore, Mary, Veronica “Ronnie,” Josephine and Frances “Frannie.”
Mrs. Dlugopolski was a resident of Lombard since 1965. She was a homemaker and had worked part-time as a hairdresser, an accountant and doing embroidery work. Mrs. Dlugopolski liked to cook and baked cookies for the neighborhood. She had spent part of the year in St. Petersburg, Fla., and was a member of the Purple Hat Society. Mrs. Dlugopolski was an active member of Christ the King Church in Lombard.

Alvin W.T. Harks Jr.

Alvin W.T. Harks Jr., 85, of Lombard, died Saturday, June 28, at Beacon Hill Healthcare Center.
A private graveside service will take place at Assumption Cemetery in Wheaton.
Mr. Harks is survived by his wife of 66 years, Irma E.; children, Glenn (Karen), Gregg (Cari) of Lombard, Cheryl (Doug) Hoy and Debbie (Kevin) Kelly; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sisters and a son, Gary.
Mr. Harks was a World War II veteran. He graduated from Luther North High School in Chicago and had resided in Lombard since 1960. Mr. Harks retired from C.P.C. International as a transportation manager in 1994.

Floyd Herzog

Floyd Herzog, 89, who lived in Lombard over 60 years, passed peacefully on June 28, 2014.
A celebration and remembrance service will be held for friends and family at a later date.
Floyd is survived by sons, Bill (Laura) Herzog, Dan (Connie) Herzog and Jay (Sherry) Herzog; daughters, Sue (Bob) Dalton, Lynn (Joe) Kilian and Eileen (Dean) Knox; 19 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; and many friends and relatives. He was preceded in death by his first wife, June; second wife, Lois; son, Tom; and brother, Charles Robert Herzog.
Floyd was active in Lombard for many years. He owned a heating and air conditioning business that served many local residents. He loved God, having been very active at First Church of Lombard. He was also active with the local Kiwanis Club.
But most of all, he loved his family and friends. Exemplifying God, he taught us all that a full life can best be achieved through love for one another.

Helen Morris

Helen Morris, nee Ulber, 91, of Lombard, died Saturday, June 28, at Good Samaritan Hospital.
Visitation will be today, July 2, from Brust Funeral Home, 135 S. Main St., Lombard, to Mass at Christ the King Church. Interment will be at Queen of Heaven Cemetery in Hillside.
Mrs. Morris is survived by her husband of 65 years, Jack, of Lombard; children, Tom (MaryJean), Kathy Lofgren, Loretta and Michael (Helen); seven grandchildren; and was the aunt of three. She was preceded in death by her son, Jay; and sisters, Anne and Tess.
Mrs. Morris was born in Austria and came to the United States in 1927. She lived in Lombard for the last six years, was formerly of Norwood Park and was then a parishioner of St. Eugene’s Church. Mrs. Morris was a member of Christ the King Church.

Henry J. Stawarski

Henry J. “Hank” Stawarski, 87, a lifelong resident of Bellwood, died Tuesday, June 24, in Bellwood.
Funeral services were held Saturday, June 28, with prayers from Brust Funeral Home, 135 S. Main St., Lombard, to Mass at St. Simeon Church, Bellwood. Interment was at Queen of Heaven Cemetery, Hillside.
Mr. Stawarski is survived by his wife of 65 years, Ann; children, Janet (Wayne) Smith, Henry (Elvira) and Robert (Deborah); eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and sister, Rose Fisher of Bellwood.
Mr. Stawarski was born in Bellwood and had attended Proviso East High School. He was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. Mr. Stawarski had worked for Borg Warner from 1947 to 1982. He had worked part-time at Brust Funeral Home in Lombard for over 20 years.  He had worked at the Senne Funeral Home in Maywood in the early 1940s. 
Mr. Stawarski was active with the Retirement Group from Borg Warner. He was a scratch golfer and had won several company tournaments at Borg Warner. He loved to work.

James D. Szczelaszczyk Jr.

James D. Szczelaszczyk Jr., 22, of Villa Park, died Saturday, June 28.
Visitation is today, July 2, at Steuerle Funeral Home 350 S. Ardmore Ave., Villa Park, where funeral services will be held Thursday, July 3. Interment is at Memory Gardens Cemetery,
Mr. Szczelaszczyk was the son of James and Catherine Szczelaszczyk; grandson of Margaret and the late Arthur Szczelaszczyk, and the late Paul and Mariam Joseph; and nephew to many aunts and uncles and caring cousins.
Mr. Szczelaszczyk was born Jan. 14, 1992, in Elmhurst. He graduated from Willowbrook High School in 2010 and received a B.A. in Geography from Northern Illinois University in 2014. He was a proud member of Pi Kapp Phi fraternity.
