Robert G. Canfield

Longtime resident of Lombard, Robert G. Canfield, died on Tuesday, March 31, 2015, at his home on Stewart Avenue at the age of 82. He was born in Villa Park on Sept. 1, 1932, to Howard and Martha Canfield, owners of a small grocery store on St. Charles Road in downtown Lombard.
He married Joyce Graue of Elmhurst in 1951. Soon thereafter he was drafted into the U.S. Army to serve in the Korean conflict but because he suffered a broken leg during his training he was sent to Germany instead.
Bob worked in the construction industry most of his life. He served as a foreman and superintendent on a number of significant construction projects such as the McDonald’s Training Center in Oak Brook and the Fairmont Hotel in downtown Chicago.
Above all Bob was a family man who loved participating in sports of all kinds. He especially loved baseball, softball, golf, bowling, darts and horseshoes. Playing card games and yard games with family and friends were special times. His miniature train exhibit in his basement was a lifetime hobby and a pride and joy to share with his grandchildren.
He and his family attended Lombard Bible Church for many years and more recently he and Joyce attended Grace Church of DuPage.
The Funeral Service was held Saturday, April 4, at Brust Funeral Home, 135 S. Main St., Lombard. Interment followed at Chapel Hill Gardens West in Oakbrook Terrace.
Mr. Canfield is survived by his loving wife, Joyce; his children, Becky (Will) Suckrow, Tracey (Dennis) Pust, and Robert (Jennifer) Canfield; his 11 grandchildren; his four great-grandchildren; his sister, Virginia Fletcher; and many nieces and nephews.
Mr. Canfield is preceded in death by his infant daughter, Cathy Jo; his siblings, Richard, David, Jeanne, Elizabeth and Caryl; and his brother-in-law, Fred Fletcher.

Jean D. Devaud

Jean D. Devaud 88, of Villa Park, Ill. U.S. Army Korean Veteran. Beloved husband of Marilyn, nee Nathan; loving father of Julie Devaud and Anne Devaud (Margaret Klemundt); dear grandfather of Nathan, Marco, Claire and Renee; brother-in-law of Jean (Duane) Stech; uncle and great uncle of many.

Robert E. Engdahl

Robert E. Engdahl, 91, of Elmhurst, formerly of Villa Park, passed away peacefully March 30, 2015. He was born Sept. 22, 1923, in Chicago, graduated from Lane Tech HS and from IIT with a BS in chemical engineering. As a 1st LT in the Army Air Corps, he served as a B-29 navigator on Guam in WWII.
Robert was a founding principal of Thiele-Engdahl, Inc., a leading producer of printing inks. He enjoyed many hobbies, especially fishing and sailing, culminating in a round-the-world voyage on a 38’ sailing yacht with his wife, Curlie.
Preceded in death by his parents, Emily (Faulstich) and Martin Elmer Engdahl, he is survived by his wife of nearly 70 years, Curlie Ann, nee Flowers; his children Cynthia Engdahl (Tony Sekera), Donald (Ruth) Engdahl, and Susan (Donald) Hornbostel; his grandchildren, Matthew Hornbostel and Eric Engdahl; his sister Adrienne (Richard) Berna; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held Monday, April 27, at 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Elmhurst followed by a luncheon at the church, 232 S. York Road, Elmhurst, IL, 60126. Interment of his ashes will be Tuesday morning, April 28, at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Ellwood, IL.

John Fromer

John “Phil” Fromer, age 75, of Lombard, died suddenly April 1 at his home.

Elwaine Hardtke Sr.

Elwaine William Hardtke Sr., age 81, of Lombard, was called to his heavenly home Saturday, April 4, 2015.
He was the beloved husband of Barbara, nee Renn, Hardtke for nearly 57 years. He is also survived by seven (7) children, Elwaine (Cathi) Jr., of Lombard, Mark (Cheryl) of Mission Viejo, Calif., Barbara (Russell) Hansen of Lombard, Christina (Al) Schefske of Lombard, Marcia (Troy) Huber of Lombard, Wade (Tonia) of Lombard, and Tricia (Mark) Walton of Lombard; his daughter-in-law, Debbie Hardtke of Lombard; 27 grandchildren, Jason and Doug (Jenelle) Hardtke, Briana (Sean) Fischer, Mark Jr., Kristin, J. Michael, and Trevor Hardtke, Michael, Allison and Katie Hansen, Kaitlyn, Jessica, and Ryan Schefske, Troy Jr., Tyler, Danielle, Lauren, and Mackenzie Huber, Cole, Cade, and Callie Hardtke, Alexandra, Genevieve, Gabrielle, Sammy, Brookelyn, and Cooper Walton; his great-grandson, Douglas Hardtke Jr.; and his nieces and nephews, Jean (Tim) Graves, Sue Ann (Jimmy) Jordan, Linda (Dave) Reid, Diane (Harold) Venable, Ruth Brauninger.
Mr. Hardtke is preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Edna, nee Lindemann, Hardtke; his in-laws, Alvin and Louise, nee Busching, Renn; his brother, Edward (Rose) Hardtke; his sister, Elaine (Elmer) Krieger; his niece, Sheila Lortie; and his nephews, Bud Hardtke and Gary Krieger.
Mr. Hardtke was born on March 28, 1934, baptized April 22, 1934, in Berwyn, and confirmed March 21, 1948 in La Grange. He graduated from St. John’s School in La Grange in 1948 and from Lyons Township High School in 1952. Elwaine married the love of his life, Barbara Renn, on May 3, 1958. Mr. Hardtke received his degree from Roosevelt University in 1975 after attending night school.
Mr. Hardtke was a Veteran having served honorably in the U.S. Army.
Mr. Hardtke retired after 25 years as Vice President of Real Estate Loans from the Harris Bank in Chicago. He had previously served on the La Grange Postal Service, Lombard Police Department and Volunteer Fire Department, and the York Township Assessor’s Office.
Mr. Hardtke was an avid sports fan. He enjoyed golfing and was a #1 Family Man and Die Hard Cub Fan! The games he loved watching the most were the ones that involved his children and grandchildren. He had a passion for baseball whether it was playing, watching, or coaching which he did for many years in the Lombard Boys League.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, April 8, from 3 to 9 p.m. at Brust Funeral Home, 135 S. Main St., Lombard.
Funeral Service will be held Thursday with Mr. Hardtke Lying-In-State from 10 AM to the time of Service at 11 AM at St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Church, Lombard.
Interment will be at Concordia Cemetery, Forest Park, Ill.

Betty J. Kett

Betty J. Kett, nee Zellmer, age 90, of Lombard for 70 years, passed away on April 3 at Lexington Healthcare in Lombard .

Funeral Services will be Friday, with prayers at 9:30 a.m. from Brust Funeral Home to Sacred Heart Catholic Church for 10 a.m. Mass. Interment will follow at Assumption Cemetery in Wheaton, Ill.
Mrs. Kett was the beloved wife of Edward T.; loving mother of Thomas (Valerie Gluth) of Evergreen, Colo., Charles (Carol) of Winfield, Edward (Jenny Chidlow) of Lombard, John (Jeanne) of Elmhurst, Barbara (Bill) Conway of Chicago and Catherine of Racine, Wis. Cherished grandmother of Kyle, Shannon, Ethan, Charles and Mary. Dear sister of Dorothy (Raymond) Gresk. Aunt and Great Aunt of many.
She was preceded in death by her two sisters: Gertrude (Vernon) Lindahl, and Evelyn (Walter) Tomblin; and her two brothers: Arthur (Veronica) Zellmer, Edward (Virginia) Zellmer.

Annie Rooney Kralicek

Annie Rooney Kralicek, age 89, of Lombard, passed away March 31, 2015, at Silver Cross Hospital.
Funeral Services were Tuesday, April 7, with prayers at 9:15 a.m. from Brust Funeral Home, 135 S. Main St., Lombard, to Mass at St. John the Apostle Church, 330 N. Westmore Ave, Villa Park. Interment followed at Queen of Heaven Cemetery in Hillside.
Annie is survived by her children, Shirli, Ron, Diane (Dan), Joe (Meg), Bill (Heather); her grandchildren; her great-grandchildren; and many friends.
Annie is preceded in death by her husband, Joe Kralicek.
Annie was a resident of Lombard since 1955. She was a member of St. John the Apostle Church in Villa Park. Annie enjoyed hand making doll clothes for less fortunate children.

Helene Schindler, nee Wasko, age 95, of Lombard.
