Vernon D. Matson

Vernon D. Matson, age 91, longtime Lombard resident, passed away Aug. 5, 2016. Beloved husband of Bonny Matson; loving father of Larry Matson (Lynda), the late Jill Mulvey (Joe), Jody Baldyga (Greg) and Beth DiRienzo (Paul); and very special Grampa to 15 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Born in Jackson, Minn., a WWII veteran, Vern joined the U.S. Navy, serving 1943-46 aboard U.S. Liberty Ships as member of the Armed Guard Crew in the Pacific Ocean. Upon discharge, he began his lifelong employment with Bemis Co. from 1946-91 as General Traffic Manager, where he met Bonny, who became his bride on Valentine’s Day in 1948.

In 1956, he was admitted to practice interstate commerce law before the Federal ICC. His Bemis employment began in Minneapolis but continued in Chicago where he was transferred to in 1961. During those years in Lombard, as he and Bonny raised their four children, he was a member of First United Methodist Church, former Lombard Senior Men’s Club member and president, and member of the Traffic Club of Chicago and the Transportation Old Timers Society.

Upon his retirement in 1991, he enjoyed spending time with Bonny, the kids and grandkids at his cabin in Wisconsin, where many favorite memories were made on the lake, by the fire and around the dinner table. He built an amazing foundation for his family that all of his children and grandchildren will forever know and follow.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Aug 10, at First United Methodist Church of Lombard, officiated by the Rev. Luis Reyes.

Arrangements made by Brust Funeral Home, 135 S. Main St., Lombard.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to First United Methodist Church of Lombard would be greatly appreciated.

Henry Van Leuven

Henry Peter Joseph Van Leuven, age 95, passed away peacefully on Aug. 2, 2016. Beloved husband of the late Marion, nee Deraedt; loving father of Laura (Ruben) Vazquez, Betty (Larry) Van Leuven Goldberg, Nancy (Mark) Weinert, David (Kandy) Van Leuven, Mary (Richard) Van Leuven Wyman and Annette (John) Van Leuven Clark; devoted grandfather of 16; great-grandfather of five; brother of Mary (the late Albert) Van De Velde, Harriet (the late Babe) Van De Velde and Margaret (Jim) Bruha.

Henry loved his wife Marion and missed her greatly these past five years. Church and family were central to his life. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, active parish volunteer and lector at Mass. He proudly served as a lieutenant in the Army Medical Corps in World War II.

In Lombard, 1960, he founded Barricade Lites of Illinois, a traffic control company. He managed the company in partnership with his wife, children and mother-in-law Annie. In 1980, he retired and sold the business to his son-in-law and this is still a family endeavor.

An avid part-time bicycle racer, he continued to ride all his life and won senior championships. He loved fishing and built the country’s fastest toboggan. He was a brave and honorable man who occasionally ate cicadas.
