Jeanette A. Carpenter

 

Jeanette A. Carpenter, nee Smogur, age 78, of Berkeley, Ill., died May 30 at Apache Junction, Ariz.

Funeral Mass was held Saturday, June 4, at St. Domitilla Church, Hillside. Interment was at Queen of Heaven Cemetery, Hillside, Ill.

Virginia (Hix) Dwyer

 

Virginia (Hix) Dwyer, 73, of Ft. Myers, Fla., passed away on Thursday, April 14, 2016. She was born to Lacy and Elsie Hix on Sept. 5, 1942.

Virginia attended Glenbard West High School and College of DuPage. She received a nursing degree at Orange County Vocational School in 1973. In addition to her work as an LPN, she spent many years working as an Executive Secretary and Accounting Manager. She married Dalton Dwyer in 1980. The couple retired and moved to Florida in 1990. Virginia resided at Jamaica Bay and Barkley Place in Ft. Myers prior to her passing.

Preceding her in death were her parents, husband and son, Michael Jeffris. She is survived by her grandson, Brandon Jeffris; two sisters, Gail Tudor and Joyce Sutton (Jim); stepsister, Lynne DeNio (Doug); several nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, stepchildren, stepgrandchildren and stepgreat- grandchildren. 

A memorial service will be held at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 215 S. Lincoln, Lombard, Ill., at noon on Saturday, June 11, 2016.

John Richard Finn

 

John Richard Finn, 75, of Mooresville, N.C., formerly of Lombard, passed away June 1, 2016, at Lake Norman Regional Hospital. John was born Aug. 7, 1940, in Chicago, Ill., to the late John and Isabelle Slad Finn. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran and owned his own plumbing company. He loved to spend time with his grandchildren, along with fishing and baking.

John is survived by his loving family: wife, Gillian nee Poole Finn; sons, Sean C. Finn (Susan), Ryan J. Finn (Jeanell), Ian W. Finn (Deborah); daughter, Errin K. Smith (Steven); 13 grandchildren; brothers, Thomas Finn (Barbara) and Patrick Finn (Nina); and uncle and great-uncle of many.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 11, from 1-4 p.m. with a service at 2 p.m. at Brust Funeral Home, 135 S. Main St., Lombard. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

Daniel J. Ketchum

 

Daniel J. Ketchum, age 57, of Lombard, passed away May 31 at Elmhurst Hospital.

A memorial gathering was held Saturday, June 4, at Brust Funeral Home, 135 S. Main St., Lombard.

Jean Klaus

 

Jean Klaus, age 84, of Glen Carbon, Ill., died Saturday, May 28, 2016, at her residence. She was born July 13, 1931, in Chicago, the daughter of the late Clarence and Estelle (Rainis) Schaefer. She married Richard G. Klaus June 17, 1950, in Chicago. He preceded her in death Jan. 23, 2013. 

Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Carole Lackowski.  She is survived by two sons, Mark (Karen) Klaus of Evansville, Ind., and Paul (Barbara) Klaus of Edwardsville; four grandchildren,  Jessica (Matt) Lamont of Carmi, Ill., Michael (Kate) Klaus of Carmi, Ill., Steven Klaus of Nashville, Tenn., and Lydia Klaus of Edwardsville; two great-grandchildren,  Jacob and Alyson Lamont; two sisters,  Geri Moeller of Downers Grove, Ill., and Clarice Moeller of Darien, Ill.; and one brother, Bob Schaefer of Geneva, Ill.

Mrs. Klaus was an administrative assistant for Elmhurst Hospital in Elmhurst, Ill. She was a longtime member of Sacred Heart Church in Lombard before moving to Glen Carbon.  She was currently a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church in Edwardsville. 

A funeral Mass was held Friday, June 3, 2016 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Edwardsville. Burial was in St. Boniface Cemetery in Edwardsville.  Memorial contributions may be given to the church. 

 

Robert G. Whitacre

 

Robert G. Whitacre (Bob), Captain USNR-RET, age 93, of Lombard, Ill., transitioned peacefully at home on May 31, 2016. Born in Lerna, Ill., July 17, 1922, he is survived by his wife of 72 years, Miriam (Kay) Whitacre, daughter Linda (Lynn) Whitacre of Colorado Springs, Colo., and son John Whitacre of Glendale Hts., Ill.  Preceded in death by his brother William D. Whitacre, Decatur, Ill.; survived by sister-in-law Shirley M. Whitacre and nephew Donald Whitacre, both in Decatur.  Also, Richard Whitacre of Saratoga, Calif., and niece JoAnn Robinson of Livermore, Calif., survive. He was a graduate of Millikin University, Decatur, Ill.

Mr. Whitacre retired in 1980 as Captain, Naval Reserve Supply Corp.  He was a WWII survivor of the USS Colhoun (DD 801) attacked on April 6, 1945.  Assigned to the front gunnery mount during the Japanese attack where he performed courageously, he was well known to the men as “Pay” because he was paymaster. While the ship was sinking after one airplane went down their main stack, he returned to his quarters to retrieve pay records and money belts containing U.S. currency. When asked why, he said, “It was my job.” A broken thumb was his only war injury. He was also active duty during the Korean War, stationed at Green Cove Springs, Fla., near Jacksonville, because of his young family.

His corporate career included Kraft Foods and the last nine years at the International College of Surgeons, Chicago, retiring as comptroller.

Not only a proud member of the Rotary Club of Lombard, he was past master of Lombard Lodge No. 1098 AF&AM, as well as a member of Scottish Rite and Medinah Shrine. The Whitacres have been longtime members of the First United Methodist Church of Lombard.

The family wishes to thank the team members of Lexington Hospice of Lombard for their incredible care and comfort during Robert’s last few days. 

Visitation is Thursday, June 9, 4-8 p.m. at Chapel Hill Gardens West Funeral Home and Cemetery, 17w201 Roosevelt Road, Oakbrook Terrace, IL 60181. Funeral Service Friday, June 10, 10 a.m. at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Chapel Hill Gardens West Cemetery, Masonic Garden.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Shriner’s Hospital for Children, 2211 N. Oak Park Ave., Chicago, IL 60707.
