Evelyn Louise Borchardt

Evelyn Louise Borchardt, nee Kunzelman, was born May 28, 1928, at Alma Center, Wis., the daughter of Roy H. Kunzelman and Ella E. Kunzelman. Evelyn was baptized at Grace Lutheran Church, Alma Center, Wis., on July 23, 1928.
Evelyn attended Prindle Valley School in Avon Township, Jackson County, Wis., and was a 1945 graduate of Alma Center High School. She was confirmed at Grace Lutheran Church in Alma Center on Nov. 9, 1941.
Evelyn enrolled at Whitewater State Teachers College (now University of Wisconsin, Whitewater), in a business education program. In 1948 she was employed by the Scott-Atwater Manufacturing Company in Minneapolis, Minn., as a secretary.
On Aug. 14, 1949, Evelyn married Robert L. Borchardt, a high school sweetheart, at Grace Lutheran Church, Alma Center, Wis. The couple resided in Minneapolis, Minn., until June of 1950 when he graduated from the University of Minnesota.
The couple moved to the Chicago area when Robert obtained employment with Motorola, Inc. Evelyn began work for Remco, Inc., a distributor of her previous employer. They established a home in Lombard, Ill., and were blessed with four daughters over the next years, Robyn, Ruth, Kathryn and Karla.
As a homemaker, Evelyn was active in the Ladies Aid Society at St. John’s Lutheran Church and also led “The 4-H plus 3” 4-H group, leading her group to a number of awards in clothing and foods both at the DuPage County Fair and the Illinois State Fair. When the children were in school, she was employed as secretary to the DuPage County auditor, state representative, Illinois Education Association and legal office prior to her retirement.
Evelyn found joy in her own accomplishments and those of her daughters as seamstress and as culinary artisan. She enjoyed golf, playing in several leagues and was also an ardent bridge player, playing in several clubs over the years. In her community in recent years, she was active in the Altar Guild, the Senior Bible Class, and served on the Evangelism Committee of St. John’s Lutheran Church, as well as taking on computer input work for the church office.
Mrs. Borchardt is survived by her husband, Robert “Bob”; her four daughters, Robyn (George) Fram of Roselle, Ruth (John) Stoeckel of Rochester, Minn., Kathryn (Mark) Kornatz of Lombard and Karla (Daniel) Lang of Elgin; nine grandchildren, Marta (Tim) Rogers of Minnesota, George (Ashley) of St. Louis, Lindsey (Scott) Lindquist of Wheaton, Kathrin (Justin) Stamschror of Washington, Matthew Kornatz of Chicago, Josie Stoeckel of Minnesota, Holly (Jeff) Brandt of Iowa, Stephanie Kornatz of Spain and Eric Brandenburg of Wisconsin; five great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.
Mrs. Borchardt was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, George and Ernest.
Evelyn had a driving interest in family—four daughters and their families, nine grandchildren, and especially in her five great-grandchildren. It was also expressed in her interest in family history/genealogy. Evelyn’s interest and skill in bridge led to many friendships in that field. Earlier in her life, she worked in community service as an election judge for more than 20 years. She was a resident of Lombard since 1953. The last eight years were spent in the retirement community of Beacon Hill.
Memorial Gathering will be held today, March 23, from 4-8 p.m. at Brust Funeral Home, 135 S. Main St., Lombard.
