David R. Bestwina, of Lombard, owner of The Feed Store in Summit, Illinois. Loving Father of Brooke Ann Bestwina and Blaire (David) Gibson. Dearest Grandfather of David Gibson. Fond Brother of Joseph Bestwina. Loving Son of the Late Joseph and the Late Anna (nee Homko) Bestwina.

Jerome Lahr

 

Jerome Lahr of Vista, California, passed away on March 23, with his family at his side. Jerry was born in Racine, Wisconsin, on June 2, 1927, to Conrad and Katherine Lahr. He graduated from high school in 1945 and enlisted in the Navy. He attended Iowa State University, then joined the Air Force where he served from 1949 to 1953. He served as an MATS pilot in the Korean War after which he spent 32 years as a pilot for Trans World Airlines.

Jerry married the love of his life, Shirley Kambo, on Nov. 15, 1952. He met Shirley in Great Falls, Montana, where he served after returning from Korea. They were married for 64 years and were blessed with seven children and 15 grandchildren. Jerry lived with his family in Lombard from 1958-1979 before relocating to Vista.

Along with his wife Shirley, he unselfishly provided for his children and grandchildren, ensuring that they had all the opportunities necessary for happy and successful lives. His family could not imagine a more wonderful husband, father and grandfather.

Jerry enjoyed camping, playing golf and the Lahr Family annual Bass Lake summer vacation that originated in 2002 as a celebration of his and Shirley’s 50th wedding anniversary. His lifetime passion was aviation. He worked at the local airport and soloed at 16. His love of all things aviation continued after his flying days. He never tired of studying, watching, and talking about airplanes.

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Conrad Jr. and Robert, and his sister Katherine Emerich. Jerry is survived by his wife, Shirley; and his children, Ken, Chris, Roger (Lisa), Sue Jemmi (Brian), Patti Walker (Norman), Jenny Cuyno (Jonathan) and David (Patty); grandchildren, Jason Lahr, Lindsey Sinde, Colleen Jemmi, Zachary Cuyno, Patrick Jemmi, Victoria Lahr, Curtis Walker, Trevor Cuyno, Kelly Lahr, Shirley Lahr, Leanne Walker, Jane Jemmi, Katherine Lahr, Jackson Cuyno and Frances Lahr; his sister, Mary Claire Beinemann; and many nieces and nephews.

A Funeral Mass was held at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Vista. Burial was at Eternal Hills Memorial Park following the Mass.

 

Stephen D. Lewis

 

Stephen D. Lewis, age 74, of Lombard, Vietnam Air Force veteran, passed away Sunday, April 9.

Funeral services were held Saturday, April 15, at Brust Funeral Home, 135 S. Main St., Lombard. Interment followed at Oakridge Cemetery.

Bernard Newton

 

Bernard Newton, 85, of Greenville, South Carolina, formerly of Lombard, died Wednesday, April 12, 2017, in Greenville. Bernard died in peace surrounded by his family who were present during his final moments.

Bernard was born in Paterson, New Jersey, and received his Bachelor’s degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York, and served four years as an Officer in the Marine Corps.    He was a resident of Lombard, from 1966 through 1988, during which time he served as Cubmaster of Cub Scout Pack 48, an officer of Lombard Boys Baseball, member of Sacred Heart School Board and Chairman of the Village Board of Zoning Appeals. He was a charter member of Fr. Boecker Council, Knights of Columbus.

Mr. Newton served three terms on the Greenville County Board of Zoning Appeals, St. Anthony’s School Board, and was a member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Greenville. He has been a volunteer at the PGA BMW Pro-Am Tournament for more than 10 years and delivered Meals on Wheels.  

Mr. Newton was a Construction Executive for Turner Construction Company. Major Chicago projects included O’Hare Plaza, Time-Life and Amoco Buildings and the United Airlines Terminal at O’Hare Airport; also Lincoln Center in New York and several projects in Detroit, Miami, Albany, NY and Fort Wayne, IN.

Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Dorothy Newton; sons, Mark (Frances) of Boston, Michael (Leslee) and Christopher (Kimberly) of Greenville, Matthew (Rebecca) of Downers Grove, Dewey (Bernice) of Dallas, Texas, Jonathan (Fredonna) of Olive Branch, Mississippi, and Roy of Lombard; his sister, Jane Reilly of San Diego; his sister-in-law, Joan Blum (Kenneth) of Indianapolis; and 18 grandchildren, Stephanie, Valerie, Timothy, Michael, Taylor, Christopher, Adam, Samuel, Sarah, Jessica, Megan, Jacqueline, Danielle, Kathleen, Megan, Tara, Brett and Natalie; three great grandchildren, Luke, Genevieve and Lillian, all spread out all across the country. He is predeceased by his son, Robert.

Funeral Mass was held Tuesday, April 18, 2017, at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church. Burial was in M.J. “Dolly” Cooper Veterans Cemetery.
