Sheridan George LaChapelle

Sheridan George LaChapelle, age 88, of Wheaton, was born into eternal life Jan. 28, 2017.

George, as he preferred to be known, is survived by his devoted wife of 64 years, Barbara (nee Warner); his loving children, Bob (Winnie) LaChapelle Sr., Nanette (Gary) Anderson and Denise (Mike) Meissner; grandchildren, Will (Jen) LaChapelle, Bob (Kristin) LaChapelle Jr., Greg (Adrienne) LaChapelle, Gary (Shannon) Anderson Jr., Jeff Anderson, Cori (Rob) Allison, Mike (Chitra) Meissner and Matt (Jess) Meissner; 10 great-grandchildren; his sister, Dottie O’Connell (the late George) of Michigan; his brother Tom (Lynn) LaChapelle of Wisconsin; his sister-in-law, Nancy (Jerry) Warner Rogers Sayles of Florida.

He was an uncle to many and has many dear friends, besides which, he never met a stranger. George will also be missed by his devoted dog, Duffy.  He was preceded in eternal life by his parents, the late George and the late Florence (nee Trepanier) LaChapelle; and his sister, the late Betty (the late Joe) Beveridge.

Born Sept. 24, 1928, in Oconto, Wisconsin, George was raised in Escanaba, Michigan. Music was an essential part of life for the LaChapelle family; George, his parents, his brother, and both sisters were all very talented musically. Escanaba was also where he met Barbara, the love of his life, as she was entering high school and he was entering the army to serve in the Korean War.  They married shortly after Barbara graduated high school and George was honorably discharged.

George, Barbara and their growing family eventually settled in Lombard where they spent many happy hours with multiple generations of family and friends singing and playing music, with George on guitar, Barbara on piano, and singing by everyone.  George was also fond of card games while watching his beloved Chicago Bears and playing competitive family croquet games (he was known as the Red Baron which matched his mallet and ball).

George was a master meat-cutter who worked for Jewel Food Stores in multiple locations, many of them as manager of the meat department, and he retired from Jewel after 31 years.

In retirement, George, with Barbara, enjoyed woodworking and making crafts and held an annual Christmas craft show and sale in their home for many years.  They also spent time in Mesa, Arizona, during the winter months. As time went on, they decided to downsize their home and bought a condo in Wheaton where George loved to sit on their patio interacting with nature and her creatures as well as going to the Friday night fish fry and Wednesday night hamburgers at the VFW.  Above all, George’s favorite activity was spending time with his loving family and many dear friends whose love formed a mutual admiration society.

George’s memorial service will be held Wednesday, Feb. 8, at 11 a.m., First Church of Lombard, 220 S. Main St., Lombard, in the main sanctuary; www.firstchurchoflombard.org 630-629-2630.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Maple Street Chapel are appreciated.

Arrangements made by Brust Funeral Home. Visit www.brustfuneralhome or call 888-629-0094 for more information.
