Her parents immigrated to the U.S. in the 1910s from Ireland. Anne’s father worked as a Chicago police officer and her mother was a homemaker until she contracted TB when Anne was 3. Annie spent the next three years of her life in a sanitarium before succumbing to the disease when Anne was just 6 years old.
Anne grew up at 4822 Kinzie St. with her sister Margaret (Peg), her father, her Uncle Ambrose Doran, Aunt Maggie Doran, Uncle Patrick Doran and his two sons. It was a very small, crowded house, but Anne recalled her childhood fondly and was well loved despite the loss of her mother.
Anne attended Our Lady Help of Christians grade school and remained in touch with many of her grade school friends for most of her life, meeting once a month for “club.” She graduated from Trinity High school in 1943 and went on to complete secretarial school. She worked as a secretary in Chicago prior to marrying Bernard Puzan on June 7, 1951. After the wedding, Anne and Bern moved to Urbana, where they lived in married student housing while Bern finished his degree at the University of Illinois and Anne worked as a secretary for the dean of the business school.
After returning to Chicago and starting a family in 1953, Anne retired from the workforce to raise her four children, eventually returning to work in the late 1970s as an administrative assistant for Amoco.
Anne was an excellent seamstress, sewing clothes for herself, her children and their dolls. She and Bern were active members of the Ocean Waves square dance club for many years. She was a faithful member of Sacred Heart parish in Lombard for over 50 years.
Anne devoted most of her life to being the best mother and grandmother possible. She always put her children and grandchildren first and was never happier than when she could gather them all in one place.
Anne was predeceased by her loving husband, Bern; her dear sister, Peg (Bauer); and her beloved granddaughter, Nicole Puzan.
She is lovingly remembered and will be dearly missed by her children, Maggie (Bob) Mortimer, Jim Puzan, Kathy (Tracy) Lundin and Sue (Bob) Bietsch; her grandchildren, Joseph (Christine) Mortimer, Megan (Mike) Stanfill, Katelind Mortimer, Michael Puzan, Christopher Puzan, Kyle Lundin, Emily Lundin, Samantha Bietsch, Tom Bietsch; and great-grandchildren, Eliana and Deacon Mortimer.
Funeral mass was held Wednesday, Jan. 4, at St John Neumann’s Catholic Church, 2900 E. Main St., St. Charles. Internment was at Mt. Carmel Cemetery following the mass.
