Gregory Bakas

Gregory C. Bakas, 85, of Lombard, formerly of Spring Hill, Fla., died Tuesday, Dec. 9, in Lombard.
A visitation was held Friday, Dec. 12, at Brust Funeral Home, 135 S. Main St., Lombard. Interment was at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell.
Mr. Bakas is survived by his children, Gregory (Carol), Paul (Pamela) and Bonita (Bruce) Blake; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; siblings, Thomas of Lombard, Robert, James (JoAnne), Marita Stevenson of Lombard and Anna Mary (John) O’Hern; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lillian; and siblings, Joe, Pete, June Maric and Rose Mary.
Mr. Bakas was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps, having served during World War II as a first lieutenant and pilot of B-24s in Italy with the 15th Air Force. He was recalled and served in the Korean War also.
Mr. Bakas was the owner of Bakas & Sierzega Inc., located at 1 N. Grace St., Lombard, until 1986.

William Briggs Sr.

William G. Briggs Sr., 81, of Lombard, died Monday, Dec. 8, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove.
Funeral services were held Friday, Dec. 12, with prayers from Steuerle Funeral Home, 350 S. Ardmore Ave., Villa Park, to Mass at St. Alexander Church in Villa Park. Interment was at Assumption Cemetery in Winfield.
Mr. Briggs is survived by his children, Bruce A., Jane M. (Mick) O’Sullivan, Jonathan S., Carol L. (Michael) Young, Adam M. (Lana), Matthew D. and Jason A. (Kelly); 11 grandchildren; sister, MaryAnn (Bruno) DeAntonio; and two nieces. He was preceded in death by his wife, MaryJane; and son, William G. Jr.
Mr. Briggs was a resident of Lombard for 42 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during World War II.
Memorials to the ALS Foundation or the American Cancer Society would be appreciated. 

Donna Grote

Donna L. Grote, nee Behenna, 45, of Lombard, died Wednesday, Dec. 10, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove.
Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 15, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Villa Park, with the Rev. Robert Rogers officiating. Interment was at Mt. Emblem Cemetery.
Mrs. Grote is survived by her husband, Randy; children, Natalie,
Courtney, Ashley and Austin; father, Robert; siblings, Robert Behenna and Debra (John) Serna; and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. She was preceded in death by her mother, Nancy Behenna.
Mrs. Grote was a homemaker.
In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Grote Family Fund, c/o Trinity Lutheran Church, 300 S. Ardmore Ave., Villa Park, IL 60181, would be appreciated.

Robert Novak

Robert A. Novak, 70, of Glen Ellyn, died Wednesday, Dec. 10, in Glen Ellyn.
Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 15, with prayers from Brust Funeral Home, 135 S. Main St., Lombard, to Mass at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Lombard. Interment was at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood.
Mr. Novak is survived by his wife, Barbara R.; siblings, Leo (Sarah) and Shirley (Donald) Swanson; brother-in-law, Robert (Barbara) Struck; and six nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his niece, Linda Novak.
Mr. Novak was a resident of Glen Ellyn for 24 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, and had retired in August 2001 after 42 years with United Airlines as a flight crew scheduler. He was a member of American Legion Post #0181.

James Pike

James F. Pike, 54, of Addison, died Monday, Dec. 8, in Addison.
A memorial Mass was held Friday, Dec. 12, at St. John the Apostle Church in Villa Park. Interment was private.
Mr. Pike is survived by his son, Ryan; mother, Dolores; siblings, John R. Jr. (Christine), William S., Mary E. Pittman and Daniel T. (Sharon); and many nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles. He was preceded in death by his father, John R.
In lieu of flowers, family memorials would be appreciated.

Dolores Schweihs

Dolores L. Schweihs, 83, died Wednesday, Dec. 10, at Beacon Hill in Lombard.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec. 13, at Steuerle Funeral Home, 350 S. Ardmore Ave., Villa Park. Interment was at Queen of Heaven Cemetery in Hillside.
Mrs. Schweihs is survived by her children, Diane (Bruce) Anderson, Steven and Betty (Ken) Dahm; one grandchild; brother, Fred Halek; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jerome; and daughter, Carol Natoli.
Mrs. Schweihs was a homemaker.
In lieu of flowers, memorials to Children’s Memorial Hospital, 2300 Children Plaza, Chicago, IL 60614; or the American Red Cross of Greater Chicago, 2200 W. Harrison, Chicago, IL 60612, would be appreciated.

Frank Shortall

Frank C. Shortall, 65, of Lombard, died Sunday, Dec. 14, in Lombard.
Visitation will be Friday, Dec. 19, at Brust Funeral Home, 135 S. Main St., Lombard.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Dec. 20, with prayers from the funeral home to Mass at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Lombard. Interment is private.
Mr. Shortall is survived by his wife of 40 years, Joan E.; children, Brian (Karen) and Elizabeth; one grandson; siblings, James (Rose Mary), Theresa Caputo, Mary Ellen Amabile of Lombard, Michael (Sue), Edward (Carol) and Joan Marie; and many in-laws, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister, Patricia M.; parents, Dr. James and Mary Jane Shortall; and brother-in-law, Ralph Amabile.
Mr. Shortall was a resident of Lombard for 35 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, and was a 20-year employee of D.H.L. Inc.

Irmgard Smith


Irmgard E. Smith, nee Haage, of Chicago, formerly of Lombard, died Sunday, Dec. 14, at Swedish Covenant Hospital in Chicago.
Visitation will be Friday, Dec. 19, at Brust Funeral Home, 135 S. Main St., Lombard.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Dec. 20, at First Church of Lombard. Interment is at Mt. Emblem Cemetery in Elmhurst.
Mrs. Smith is survived by her children, Dr. Daniel J., M.D. (Angela Murray), Dr. Nancy L., DDS (Eugene Noel) and Dr. Lowell R., O.D. (Isabel Smith); six grandchildren; sister, Neva (Ronald) Seymour; sister-in-law, Alvera Haage; and many nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur G.; parents, Frank W. and Hanna Haage; and brother, Hans Haage.
Mrs. Smith was born in Peotone and lived in Lombard from 1955 to 2006. She had spent the last two years in Flossmoor and Chicago to be close to her children. She retired from Blistex Inc. in Oak Brook, where she worked in the purchasing department.
Mrs. Smith was an avid golfer and had gotten a hole in one on two occasions. She was on bowling and bridge leagues in Lombard, and had been active at First Church of Lombard.

Scott Wagner

Scott A. Wagner, 50, of Lombard, died Thursday, Dec. 4, in Lombard.
A memorial gathering was held Thursday, Dec. 11, at Brust Funeral Home, 135 S. Main St., Lombard. Interment was private.
Mr. Wagner is survived by his sons, Scott and Steven Luther; parents, Richard and Florence, of Lombard; brothers, David (Mary) of Lombard and Thomas of Lombard; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother, Daniel.
Mr. Wagner was a volunteer at Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove for the last three-and-a-half years.

Wilbur Westphal

Wilbur C. Westphal, 93, formerly of Elmhurst, died Saturday, Dec. 13, at Provena Cor Mariae Center in Rockford.
Funeral services will be held today, Dec. 17, at Steuerle Funeral Home, 350 S. Ardmore Ave., Villa Park, with the Rev. Romir Esguerra of Calvary United Methodist Church in Villa Park officiating. Interment is at Arlington Cemetery in Elmhurst.
Mr. Westphal is survived by his daughter, Nancy; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wives, Rosemary “Trudy” and Jessie “Betty” Westphal; and daugther, Charlene Peterson Owen.

Norine Young

Norine M. Young, nee Rosanova, 85, of Lombard, died Saturday, Dec. 13, at Snow Valley Nursing Home in Lisle.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Dec. 16, at Brust Funeral Home, 135 S. Main St., Lombard. Entombment was at Queen of Heaven Mausoleum in Hillside.
Mrs. Young is survived by her husband, Max; siblings, Robert Rosanova and Romona (Mike) Accetta; brother-in-law, Michael Perri; sisters-in-law, Virginia Rosanova, Virginia Rosanova and Loretta Rosanova; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her children, Matthew, Lucille and Victoria; siblings, Helen Perri, Armidi Gentile, Forest, Ralph, Rudolf and Frank Rosanova; sisters-in-law, Theresa and Frances Rosanova; and brother-in-law, Frank Gentile.
Mrs. Young had been a resident of Lombard for 52 years. She received her associate degree from College of DuPage and her B.A. degree in Education from Elmhurst College in 1979. From 1966-73 she had worked as an administrative assistant at the DuPage County Health Department. After receiving her degree in education, she had worked as a substitute teacher at several elementary schools in District 45.
