Grace M. Minster Grunde, nee Frahm, 82, of Lombard, died Nov. 9 at Central Baptist Home in Norridge, Ill.
Visitation will be held Thursday, Nov. 13, from 4-8 p.m. at Brust Funeral Home, 135 S. Main St., Lombard.
Funeral services will be held Friday, Nov. 14, at 11 a.m. at Brust Funeral Home. Interment will be at Chapel Hill Gardens West Cemetery in Oakbrook Terrace, Ill.
Mrs. Grunde is survived by her husband, Herbert Grunde; five children, Deryl (Chris) Beebe of Oregon, Gail Hanczar of St. Charles, Scott (Cathy) Minster of Hampshire, Jack V. (Barbara) Minster of Downers Grove and Gordon Minster of Naperville; 13 grandchildren, Rob (Ann) Harrison, Rick Harrison, Ron Harrison, Rachel (Andy) Johnson, Becky Deen, Kristoffer Hanczar, Rob (Jennifer) Hanczar, Scott (Betsy) Minster, Samantha (Brian) Kurkjian, Amanda Minster, Amy (Brian Kalbfleisch) Minster, Elizabeth (Geraint) Phillips and Jack (Mary) Minster; 20 great-grandchildren; her brother, Kenneth (Lois) Frahm of San Diego; and three stepchildren, Dan (Pat) Grunde of Chicago, Tim (Nancy) Grunde of Wheeling and Bonnie (Jim) Hank of Kirkwood, Mo.; and stepgrandchildren.
Mrs. Grunde was preceded in death by her first husband, Jack O. Minster; two brothers, E.B. (the late Gladys) Frahm and Robert Frahm; and her sister, Mary Jane (the late Leonard) Van Dyke.
Grace Margaret Frahm was born in Chicago on May 16, 1926, to Erwin B. and Ruth G. (Ewald) Frahm. The youngest of four surviving children, she attended Gray Elementary School and graduated from Schurz High School at the age of 16.
Grace married Jack O. Minster of Elmwood Park in 1943 in Monterey, Calif., prior to his deployment with the Navy. They had five children over the next 13 years. In 1952 they moved to Lombard, Ill.
Jack and Grace attended Midwest Bible Church as youths and young adults, where they both played in the church band, Jack on the baritone horn and Grace on the saxophone. Lombard Bible Church became their church home in 1954, where Grace continued to attend until Alzheimer’s disease made it necessary for her to move to Central Baptist Village in 2006.
She was very active in her church, working with youth groups, teaching Sunday school and playing both piano and organ for services. She had a beautiful singing voice and sang in the church choir, in ensembles and on the radio program, “Songs in the Night.”
Once her children were old enough, Grace began working in local businesses. She started working for her husband in Jack’s Bicycle Shop in Lombard. She then worked for Uncle Vince’s Shoe Store followed by a time at Bollinger’s Drug Store. After a short career at Kinney Shoe Store, she began a 20-year-plus career for Jewel Food Stores. Grace started at the old Jewel on St. Charles Road and worked at several stores in the area, finally working at the “new” Jewel on Main Street and Roosevelt Road. Because of her many jobs in the community, particularly in the Jewel stores, Grace made many friends and was always recognized by local people in the community years after her retirement. She ended her working career at North American Baptist Conference.
After Jack’s death in 1991, Grace became reconnected with Herb Grunde, whom she had known as a youth at Midwest Bible Church and who had also moved his family to Lombard in the early 1970s. Herb’s family had also attended Lombard Bible Church prior to moving back to Chicago. Engaged on Valentine’s Day 1993, Herb and Grace were married that September.
Grace loved to travel and made several trips to Europe with Jack. Her first trip was to visit a pen pal in Wales—a girl to whom Grace had written since she was in seventh grade. Grace and Herb also visited his ancestral land of Norway and spent three months living in Sri Lanka when Herb volunteered as a business consultant.
Grace was devoted to her children and spent many hours with and advocating for her youngest son, Gordon Minster, after a motorcycle accident in 1978 left him a paraplegic. Later, Gordon was able and happy to reciprocate as Alzheimer’s disease robbed Grace of her independence.
