Gordon Mark Minster

Gordon Minster, 49, of Naperville, formerly of Lombard, died Tuesday, Nov. 18, at Illinois Independent Living Center, Naperville.
Visitation was held Monday, Nov. 24, from 4 p.m. until the time of funeral service at 7 p.m. at Brust Funeral Home, 135 S. Main St., Lombard, with the Rev. Steve C. Hammer, of Lombard Bible Church, officiating. Interment will be private.
Born on Nov. 27, 1958, to Jack and Grace Minster of Lombard, Gordon Mark Minster arrived in the early morning hours of Thanksgiving Day, the last of five children. He passed into Glory just nine days before his 50th birthday, which would also have been on a Thanksgiving Day.
Until two years ago he lived his entire life in the family home, referred to as “512” in Lombard, the last few years living there alone. In 2006 he moved into an apartment complex in Naperville where he could receive some assistance with his medical and mobility difficulties.
Gordon’s caring personality, generosity and love of family surfaced early. Being the youngest and separated in age from his siblings, he spent time with his mother and enjoyed visiting elderly family members with her. He became a real favorite of the older generation. He loved them and they loved him. As a child he enjoyed having a November birthday. His birthday present money was his resource for buying family Christmas presents.
He greatly loved immediate and extended family, attending family functions whenever he was able. Family connections were very important and he kept in touch with many outside the immediate circle. Often late to “the party,” he stayed well past the departure of other guests. At times we told him the party started earlier than it actually did just to get him there closer to the real time.
Never married and not having children, Gordon greatly loved his nieces and nephews. He had a special relationship with his nephew Rob Harrison, who was only four years younger than Gordon. Even into Rob’s teens and after Rob’s family moved to Oregon in 1978, the two remained very close.
Starting with their father Jack, the Minster men had a love of motorcycles. Gordon loved his bike, a 1973 Honda 750. However, on June 5, 1978, Gordon and his bike lost in a car/motorcycle collision just three blocks from home. Left a paraplegic as a result, and unable to ride a motorcycle anymore, a wheelchair and Olds Toronados got him where he wanted to go.
Prior to his accident Gordon worked for several local businesses. As a boy he sold programs at O’Hare Stadium where his father was a flagman. He delivered Lombardian newspapers, was a busboy at Friar’s (now Casey’s) in Lombard and was a pot washer at Woolworth’s.
As he got older he was a short order cook at Penney’s in Yorktown Mall and at McDonald’s. Next he worked at Memco as a custodian, cooked at JoJo’s and cut carpet at Goldblatt's. He returned to short order cooking at Sambo’s Pancake House and then pumped gas at Martin Oil on Roosevelt Road, where he became an assistant manager and was transferred to the station on North Ave. He drove for Lombard News Agency and worked for his brother at Piano Transports.
After the accident he worked for his brother at Scott Minster Services, Inc. in the office and for his brother Jack at Brinn Tire. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Columbia College in Radio Sound in 1992 and was a disc jockey for WCRX FM for three years.
A lover of music, he became an avid collector of records and CDs. He enjoyed collecting coins and giving proof sets to his nieces and nephews.
He became a computer guru and Internet game player, spending many hours playing “World of Warcraft” with his nephews and others. Gordon was a member of the motorcycle club called The Mad Men from 1990 to 2003, where he did some DJ work at club parties and was dubbed “Wheels,” a nickname that forever stuck with his friends.
His mind was like a steel trap, remembering a wealth of information. Amazingly he remembered all the family birthdays and anniversaries. He was a serious and successful game player, able to take all comers in Othello and Scrabble or any other game.
Over the 30 years following his accident he made many friends in the area medical facilities, spending time at Loyola Medical Center, the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, Central DuPage Hospital and Marianjoy Rehabilitation Center.
Gordon was predeceased by his father, Jack O. Minster, in 1991; and by his mother, Grace Minster Grunde, on Nov. 9, 2008. He is survived by his stepfather, Herb Grunde of Norridge; sisters, Deryl (Chris) Beebe of North Bend, Ore. and Gail Hanczar of St. Charles, Ill.; and brothers, Scott (Cathy) Minster of Hampshire, Ill. and Jack V. (Barbara) Minster of Downers Grove.
He is also survived by his beloved nieces and nephews: Rob (Ann) Harrison, Rick Harrison, Ron Harrison, Rachel (Andy) Johnson, Rebecca Deen, Kris Hanczar, Rob (Jennifer) Hanczar, Scott A. (Betsy) Minster, Samantha (Brian) Kurkjian, Amanda Minster, Amy (Brian Kalbfleisch) Minster, Elizabeth (Geraint) Phillips, Jack D. (Mary) Minster; 20 great-nieces and greatnephews; and his friend and caregiver, Rosemary Vitaioli.
