Hi, this is Lombard calling. I’d just like to congratulate the Olympic Committee for rejecting Chicago’s bid. It’s all about the dollar and thankfully the Olympic Committee recognized it and rejected their bid in the first round. Way to go, Daley. Maybe now you can get to work solving some of the problems that really need your attention. Or, maybe the voters of Chicago can finally get rid of you.

I’m a resident of Villa Park and I’d like to thank Walmart for bringing in such a beautiful store.

It is tragic that some students are dying from the swine flu. I find it interesting that all of a sudden they’re bringing grief counselors to grade schools and junior highs, middle schools and high schools to help kids deal with this grief. When I was growing up in the 1970s, I had personal friends who committed suicide, and I didn’t need a grief counselor. Nobody I knew needed a grief counselor. It’s just something unfortunate that happens. It’s just a tremendous waste of money to have these grief counselors.

Listen up, ladies and gentlemen. It never ceases to amaze me that when a politician passes away, the newspaper reporters somehow always heap praise on that politician. But in reality, all those politicians were in it for themselves and do nothing for the taxpayers. Waste and spend more tax dollars than they should. When are you newspaper reporters going to start telling the truth?

Villa Park calling to let you know that a house was broken into for the second time in two weeks. Maybe next time you call the police and tell them that people are stalking the houses and they’re back by the fence in the back yard, maybe the police officer will get out of the car next time and walk back there.

We’d like to know why we cannot get AT&T U-verse here in Lombard and our only option is Comcast. Please let us know. I understand there may be some complications of a political nature. Please let us know. We’d like to know.

Communications and Marketing Coordinator Joelyn Kott responded to your inquiry: “At this time, some Lombard residents do have the option of AT&T U-Verse, in addition to Comcast and satellite dish providers. AT&T is available on a limited basis as they are rolling out their services in the village.  Due to something they call in the industry "a competitive disadvantage,” village contacts at AT&T will not disclose where they are offering their U-Verse service.  Interested residents may contact AT&T at 1-800-288-2020 or online at Uverse1.att.com to inquire [about] service availability at a certain address.—JAC

I agree with a previous SPEAK OUT caller that Obama doesn’t want health care for illegal immigrants. In a speech to the Congressional Spanish Caucus Institute, he has argued it’s all the more reason to legalize them and ensure they eventually do get coverage. And if this Obama tactic fails, the Democrats have soundly defeated the amendment to the health care bill that would require proof of citizenship, so now, the health care bill doesn’t allow health care for illegals, but without requiring proof of citizenship, it does so by default.

This is Lombard calling. It is pouring rain right now and I just saw  a Lombard police car driving around with the windshield wipers on but the lights were not on. Isn’t that a state law? Maybe I should have made a citizen’s arrest. The law applies to everybody now, doesn’t it?

* * *

This is Lombard calling about the red-light camera. It is reported that 90 percent of tickets are for right-turn violations. I’m wondering what the percentages are of accidents caused by right-turn violations. In my opinion, the red-light camera is a way for the police department to make more money and not really for the safety issue. If they really care about safety, they shouldn’t allow people asking for donations at these intersections, such as Main and Roosevelt. I think that’s an accident waiting to happen.

* * *

I’m calling from Lombard. I noticed that with all the rain going on lately, it seems like half the people on the road don’t know that you have to turn your lights on when it’s raining. I mean, forget about state law—don’t these people realize visibility is low and they are going to cause accidents because people are looking for those lights? People are going to turn and suddenly, whoa, there’s a car right there that they didn’t see. Just wanted to get it out there that people need to turn their lights on when it’s raining.

This is Lombard calling. I read where a Lombardian implored us to stand our ground and don’t let DuPage County turn liberal blue and socialism is not the answer. This person must be extremely confused or watching way too much Fox News. The country was built on a two-party system—Democrat and Republican. I don’t see how the Democrats became socialists. I’m praying for you now. I hope you’re going to be OK.

This is Villa Park calling about cable television village meetings. Nothing wrong with my TV; there’s something wrong with the transmission.

Lombard calling, letting Glenbard East know, a lot of parents find it absurd that their kids have to pay for a parking spot to get to school. It is absolutely ridiculous. More parking should be provided and it should not cost the students to park there. It’s something that should be provided by the school. For them to have to come up with money to pay for a parking spot for them to go to school is ridiculous. There are many schools that don’t have that policy. It’s like downtown Chicago and parking in a garage—you have to pay for parking. This is not downtown Chicago, people, this is Lombard. Hopefully this is going to change at some point. It’s really getting out of hand.

This is a shout-out from Lombard to drivers. Pay attention when you’re behind the wheel. I just arrived home from Walmart and witnessed a woman with two children attempting to enter the store but were nearly hit by a mini van. Myself and another witness both commented that the driver was completely oblivious. All I know for certain is that people behind the wheel are not paying attention. Wake up, people. Might you pay more attention if this happened to your mother? I would also like to commend our reliable Lombard police force for enforcing speed limits on Route 53. Your presence is highly appreciated as is your continued dedication to the safety of the people in Lombard. Bravo.

I just wanted to let everyone know that Madison Meadow is in the running to win a $25,000 makeover to its park. So, everyone go to www.staplesdreampark.com and vote for Lombard.

Are you tired of being ignored by your leaders? Fifty-two percent of the electorate don’t favor Congress’ health care. Our leaders say they know better. Our seniors are dependent on Medicare yet our leaders will take $40 billion from Medicare. They know what’s best for us. Cap and trade rears its ugly head with more taxes and fines. Our leaders say it won’t be that bad. It is time we tell our representatives what we want. If they do not do it, vote them out. It is up to us; it’s our republic; they work for us.

Hello, Lombard calling, recently, I was driving my children to school, only to find a family of five walking up the middle of the street. Really? We have sidewalks out here.

Hi, Lombard. We’re all so quick to complain. I live and work in Lombard near Southland Park and I’m in different places throughout the day and see these tree guys who work for hours just trimming, chipping and minding their own business. These guys have been really polite when you ask them a question or talk to them—good team. The place looks great and I think they should be patted on the back more than they are.

This is Lombard calling. I thought Lombard was the Lilac Village. Now there’s a sign on westbound Roosevelt Road that says “Welcome to Lombard, Tree City USA.”

Yes, Lombard is, and I expect always will be the Lilac Village; however, Lombard has been named a Tree City USA community by The National Arbor Day Foundation for close to 20 years. The village has been named a Tree City USA to honor its commitment to its community forest. “Trees in our cities and towns help clean the air, conserve soil and water, moderate temperature and bring nature into our daily lives,” said John Rosenow, president of The Arbor Day Foundation in a 2008 press release. “Tree City USA designation recognizes the work of elected officials, staff and citizens who plant and care for the community forest. Trees are a vital component of the infrastructure in our cities and towns and provide environmental and economical benefits. A community and its citizens that recognizes these benefits and provide needed care for its trees deserves recognition and thanks.”—blm

My comment is on the red-light cameras for you new drivers and inconsiderate drivers. Red light means stop. As far as the accidents, the red-light camera reduces head-on collisions, where red-light blowers run into left-turn drivers coming from oncoming traffic, which are deadly accidents. Two, you’re always supposed to be prepared to stop and not slam into the person in front of you. Three, I think it’s a good idea. It’s for people who run the lights why we need the cameras in the first place. I hope they put in more of them.

I’d like to comment to the Village of Lombard about their Halloween safety tips. If trick-or-treating was to be done during daylight hours, why, if Halloween was on a Saturday, did they make the hours 3-7? Why wouldn’t you make it earlier for the smaller children?

This is Lombard calling. I just discovered a new shop called Next Stop, a resale shop on St. Charles Road.

What a great Saturday afternoon; I went to the Lombard Town Centre Spooktacular. The whole thing was a great experience for young and old. The vendors were reasonable and the kids’ entertainment was fun to watch, especially the petting zoo; the chicken running around in the crowd. I hope they continue it next year.

* * *

My granddaughter was upset at Spooktacular; someone had a hatchet and was trying to chop the chicken. We loved the chicken but she didn’t like seeing a kid with a hatchet trying to attack the chicken.

This is Lombard calling. Maybe some one at SPEAK OUT can answer this. Did I hear correctly that our village president and the village board are considering video gambling in Lombard? I thought DuPage County just outlawed that. Perhaps I’m wrong.

The village board did discuss this issue at its Oct. 15 board meeting. However, the matter was tabled to the first meeting in January 2010. In addition, District 2 Trustee Dick Tross moved that the item be placed on village committee agendas for review and discussion.—blm

The population of the United States is about 300 million. About 67 million people voted for Barack Obama in the 2008 presidential election. The highest-rated show on the Fox News Channel attracts less than 4 million viewers per night. Why is the Obama administration obsessed with the Fox News Channel?

I have to say I was shocked to read about someone bad-mouthing a teenager doing something good for the troops. Wow. I am speaking for myself, but I am willing to bet others would agree, that it is nice to read about good things that happen in Lombard for a change. Is this a case of jealousy? Hmm. Another football player has been in the papers a lot, getting a lot of attention and publicity and his father is not a coach. This goes to show that there is no direct correlation between the two. I’m confused. Actually, sounds like jealousy and sounds like an adult picking on a kid to me. Here’s an idea: How about you send information about something good your child is doing, so you don’t have to discount the good others are doing.

* * *

To the person who said that Dennis Lueck is still a coach 10 years after the playoffs, remember one thing: What is good isn’t always popular and what is popular isn’t always good. As for the village board, that’s another story.

* * *

I’m a Lombard resident and I just want to say I think the worst thing Lombard did was put traffic cameras at North Avenue and Roosevelt Road. I think it’s going to cause more problems and it’s just a moneymaker for the police department to make more money off of us.

Consumer alert. Please check out your canned goods for expiration dates. I just bought six canned goods two weeks ago and they were expired. That’s why the prices are so low on soups or canned fruits and vegetables. Watch out. Check your expiration date.

This is Lombard with a big thank you to a wonderful man who found my old black cell phone outside of the Villa Park Jewel store, lying on the wet ground in the pedestrian crosswalk at 5:30 p.m. in the pouring rain. Ironically, you were in a large black SUV ahead of my car and I was wondering why it took you so long to stop for pedestrians. You got out of your car, picked up my phone and then called my friends and left my phone at the Villa Park police station. You’re not only very kind, but you have great vision. Thank you.
