To speak out, send your message to Speak Out!

It’s now an hour and a-half past snowmageddon. Not a drop of rain, not a flake of snow, but somehow I’ve managed to survive. Thank God I was brought up in an era when nothing was done for me. I had to survive by myself. Without these survival techniques, I don’t know what would have happened by now.

***

I’m hunkered down in a place that’s unknown. The impending “storm,” 1 to 4 inches of snow, is coming. I’ve prepared the best that I could. I’m in a bomb shelter. I have the old Morse Code system. Somebody, please Morse Code me when it’s safe to come out from the impending 1 to 4 inches of snow that the media is making such a big deal over.

Lombard calling. Please help me understand some basic math. Donven Homes wants to make millions developing the Ken Loch Golf Course, which is the second largest remaining parcel of undeveloped open land in DuPage County, and they need Lombard to annex the property. District 3 Trustee Zachary Wilson has taken $1,000 in campaign contributions from the developers. District 5 Trustee Laura Fitzpatrick has received $90,000 from Bob Schillerstrom, the lawyer representing Donven Homes, but she asks us to believe there is no conflict of interest. If this development happens, what will we Lombard residents be left with besides increased traffic, flooding, decimated wildlife and overcrowding at our schools, particularly Manor Hill, which is already being forced to send kids to other schools since they’ve run out of classroom space? Please don’t be blinded by vague revenue promises. Don’t let this be a repeat of the Westin debacle. Call our trustees and let them know this plan is bad for Lombard.

Hello, this is a Lombard resident. I was just reading SPEAK OUT the week before Christmas, and it very well disgusts me as a veteran of this town to see that they’re thinking about privatizing the paramedics. Here’s an idea, why not privatize the trustees? I think we would have a lot less selfishness, and get items resolved and done in a timely manner. Another thing—they’re worried they can’t afford to hire another paramedic. Isn’t that too bad that all of a sudden we have an assistant for the village manager. They find money for that, but not money that would benefit all of us, rather than one individual. I think it’s sad what this town has become. It sounds more like Chicago lately than Lombard. Bye.

Hi. I think it’s time that the curtain should come down on “At This Stage.” There is no more show, so let’s end it, and I think the space they occupy should be used for the schools and the children of our community, and for special events. Things that the kids have accomplished, things that the schools have done. I think they’re more important, and we need to focus more on our children and the schools and what they do. It’s a sad thing that the show is gone, but it’s time that the curtain comes down on “At This Stage.” Thank you.

Lombard calling. It’s not just guns. Do you honestly think criminals will follow any additional laws passed on gun control? They don’t follow them now. Every law-abiding citizen suffers regardless of what side of the gun argument one is on. It is absolutely tragic and horrendous what happened in Connecticut, in Aurora, Colo.; Portland, Ore.; and on the streets of Chicago every night. All of these incidents were carried out by criminals and the mentally unstable. A serious conversation needs to be had about mental health issues in this country. Any criminal psychologist will also tell you to stop the media as they crawl all over each other in a breaking news orgy from broadcasting these events 24/7, giving even just one person on the edge the inspiration and push to follow through on action just to receive the attention they so desperately crave, even post mortem.

Villa Park calling. I’m calling regarding the diseased trees on the north side. When are they going to get them cut? They have money for a skate park, and they’re talking about a dog park. Where are their priorities? Thank you.

Hi America. Lombard here. I see our first real communist president is well on his way to completely destroying America. He says he’s concerned about our children, yet he has no problem sticking them with a 20-plus trillion-dollar debt and a country that cannot defend itself. Let’s face it, he should be impeached.

I just found the scripture reading in the paper underneath the RE/MAX ad. What a pleasant surprise. I hope to look for one again next week. Thank you very much.

If the Villa Park village manager manages the village like he gives a speech, we are in trouble. I watched part of his state of the village address. What was the point? He rambled on for about 90 minutes from subject to subject. Was that speech necessary? What did it accomplish?

Lombard calling. Question—do we really need more firemen in Lombard? A little more than four years ago, our world changed. Companies, including mine, figured out they could the same amount of work or more with less men. It seems like there’s one group in this nation that has not adjusted to the new times. How about we keep the same number of firemen, and we ask them to do more, like every other job in the United States, with the exception of teachers. We didn’t ask them to do more, either. We just gave them more money, but that’s a whole other story. I don’t possibly see how we could need more firemen. Thank you.

Why is it that whenever there’s a horrible shooting, the liberal know-it-alls want to do the following: take guns away from people who did nothing wrong, blame people and groups who weren’t responsible for the violence, and pass more legislation that will have no impact on criminals and the mentally insane?

***

I keep hearing about the dire financial condition of the U.S. Post Office. I can’t offer any major solutions for the post office’s troubles, but can I make a minor suggestion? I just went to the post office to purchase a single stamp for a birthday card. I’m not kidding, my receipt was at least two feet long. Do receipts have to be that long?

***

What would happen if sales of all guns and ammuntion in this country were outlawed on Jan. 1? I’m sure people in the ultra-liberal crowd would be happy for awhile, but it wouldn’t take long before even some of them figured out that no laws or bans are going to stop bad people from getting or using guns. Chicago has strict gun laws. How’s that been working?

We took our grandkids to Lilacia Park last Friday evening. It was beautiful. We stopped with my grandson and granddaughter and had hot chocolate and cookies, and they made an ornament with some young girls from the Lombard Historical Society. It was a wonderful evening. It gets better every year, and I just wanted to say Merry Christmas.

***

I didn’t see all of the media coverage of the senseless and tragic shooting in Connecticut, but a lot of the initial reports I heard turned out to be incorrect. Does anyone in the national media ever apologize when they make mistakes?

***

Lombard calling. I know the village won’t answer, but perhaps somebody could give me an answer. What authority does a school crossing guard have to stop traffic? I don’t believe they’re sworn officers. Who’s liable if somebody drives around them, or hits them, or hits a kid in the parkway? It would seem like they should be crossing the kids when it’s safe to cross, not stopping traffic. I don’t know what authority they have. Thank you.

For the last 10 years, I’ve heard Democrats complain that the so-called Bush tax cuts were nothing more than tax cuts for the rich. If Congress does nothing before the end of 2012, guess what—everyone’s taxes will go up in 2013. The Bush tax cuts cut taxes for everyone, and they did not cause the current trillion-dollar deficits. Those are the facts.

I went to the Glenbard East boys basketball game in Lombard on Dec. 14. The team was very good, but I was also impressed by the other students at the game. I’m referring to the enthusiastic student section in the bleachers, as well as the cheerleaders, the pom team, and of course, the band, which was excellent, as always. I would like to salute the players and all of the students who provide a great atmosphere to watch a high school game.
