To speak out, send your message to Speak Out!

The Westin was sold out during Ryder Cup week. I’m sure business was brisk at the hotel’s restaurant and bar. And what are some SPEAK OUT commenters worried about? The cost of gasoline to transport Rory McIlroy from the hotel to the golf course. People, get some perspective. The Ryder Cup was a winner for Lombard.

* * *

To all those complaining about Rory Mcilory being taken by a Lombard policeman to Medinah, please go back and read the news article so you have your facts straight. It’s amazing the number of people who comment on issues based on half-facts or complete misinformation.

* * *

Lombard calling. If you want another decade-long war, vote for Romney. His saber-rattling is obvious.

Calling from Lombard. I bought a home. I live in it. It is mine. I bought a car. I drive it. It is mine. I bought a phone and phone service. It is not mine. It is the solicitors’ and politicians’. I have called the do not call list twice in one year and each time I get even more calls. Most are not even real people but recordings. I have been in and out of the hospital several times in the past two years and I need my phone so I can get calls from day care workers, doctors, nurses and concerned relatives. I cannot even take a nap; solicitors call every 15 minutes and wake me up with their recordings. I bought a phone but I cannot use it. It is not mine.

The Federal Trade Commission (www.ftc.gov) has extensive information on how the National Do Not Call Registry works—more than space allows here. For instance, political organizations, charities and telephone surveyors are still permitted to call, and if you did business with a company, you may be contacted by a telemarketer representing that organization. Some telephones on the market offer the option of blocking phone numbers, and some service providers will do so for a fee. The FTC also emphasizes that if a third party offers to add your number to the registry—especially those who charge a fee—it is almost certainly a scam. You can also call 877-382-4357 for more information.–JAC

Hi, Lombard calling about the vice presidential debate. Paul Ryan is a good, solid candidate; conservative. We see what liberal policies have done to Europe and, oh, by the way, to the U.S. the last four years, even though Obama inherited a bit of a problem. He’s made it more of a problem. Have you heard what our debt is now and what our kids are going to have to pay down? Biden? Unbelievable. I’ve never seen such a smug, arrogant, liberal; although if I think about it I could probably name a bunch, including John Kerry and Nancy Pelosi. Just arrogant—but that’s what liberalism is about; knowing more than the average person, thinking the government knows what’s best for you.

* * *

We have an epidemic. Romney, Ryan, Joe Walsh, Peter Roskam signs are disappearing in the night. Guess it’s lie, steal, cheat from the top down.

* * *

I think people are getting too up in arms about the whole Rollins-McIlroy incident. I have concerns about speeding, celebrity treatment, potential liability, etc., like everyone else, and I am sure the village or police department will not be forthcoming with any explanation, justification or comment. At the same time, though, newspaper articles said the deputy chief was going there anyway. Also, he was on security detail at the hotel, so it’s not like he just showed up there to escort the pro golfer. I think people are just looking for an axe to grind. We should be more worried about what’s going on with our village government.

Hi. I just received a voice mail from the Republican Party telling me that my absentee ballot is in the mail and I should receive it any day. First of all, I never asked for an absentee ballot from either party, and second of all, just how many absentee ballots happen to be floating around?

Remember when the three trustees walked out of the board meeting, Ware, Gron and Giagnorio? Did they remind you of little boys who, when they know they’re losing, pick up their marbles and go home? If this had been the army, they would have been called deserters.

* * *

Hi. I would just like to point out that it was under George Bush and the Republicans the last number of years that the price of gas went to $4 and more a gallon. Nobody’s talking about that and what it’s done to family budgets across this country, including mine. And it seems like we’ve all just gotten used to being clobbered over the head with the cost of living these days. Nobody’s mentioning when it started and how it started under the policies of George Bush and the Republicans who still want to play tea party games instead of getting the work done to get this country moving the way it should. I’m so sick of this politicking.

Hi, this is Lombard. I’ve got a question with reference to signage. I know the village goes around and pulls down garage sale signs and private signs that are in the public right-of-way. By what virtue do the politicians get to put their stuff along the railroad tracks, in front of the village parking lot and whatever, and they’re just not bothered. They’re just left alone. Is it like the snake that won’t bite the lawyer—professional courtesy?

Hi, this is Villa Park calling with a concern about the Channel 6 TV station in Villa Park. What in the world is going on with the sound portion of Channel 6 board meetings? If you’ve ever tuned in, the sound is extremely poor and distracting. Here, we spent many thousands of dollars and new equipment and received nothing better in sound. Tom Cullerton says to watch the board meeting and what do we get? Poor quality sound; headaches and everything. Let’s get this thing fixed or get a new commission.

Good afternoon, a Lombard resident here. Here we go again. It’s not enough that we have to see his column almost every week in your paper, but we have to read his letter to the editor, whenever someone expresses an opinion that he does not share or offends a certain board member. Just by speaking with members of the community and reading comments posted in this paper, it is apparent that some share the view that perhaps the board did act childishly or in an embarrassing fashion in regard to the naming of a new village president. It is their opinion, and by him saying that their opinions are patently unfair—by definition meaning obviously or unmistakably wrong as an absolute—it is a slap in the face to all Lombardians who might have their own opinions. We don’t need him telling us how we should feel and in the condescending manner in which he presents his views. At least he didn’t try and correlate it somehow to the DuPage Theatre.

Hi, this Lombard calling to all the people who were complaining about Deputy Chief Rollins. Every day off-duty police officers are offered side jobs as security. They can take them or they don’t have to take them. What they do on the job is really not part of the police department’s responsibility, so he probably took the part-time job and had a great time with the golfers. Just leave him alone.

* * *

I was surprised and disappointed to see the negative comments about Deputy Chief Rollins driving Rory McIlroy to Medinah Golf Course. We say Character Counts in Lombard. Our police department made sure our competitor, whom we were hosting, got to the golf course on time so that his team could beat us in the Ryder Cup. That’s the kind of character I wish we would see more of in Lombard.

* * *

Mr. Fitzpatrick, regardless of your eloquent letter in the Lombardian and regardless of what you say, the people on the board of trustees of Lombard behaved extremely childish and badly, trying to replace our beloved Bill Mueller, who would have scolded them like the children they were portraying. Maybe they had to do it in public, but they certainly could have shown a little more decorum than the childish behavior that they did show.

Hi, Villa Park calling. This is in response to the Road Ranger in Lombard having gas prices at $1.88 a gallon, which was the gasoline price right before Barack Obama took office. But actually that’s not true. A simple Google search will tell you that in January 2008 our gas price was $3.11 per gallon. I really don’t remember the last time we had gas at a dollar-something a gallon. Anyway, that’s my input.

* * *

Oh, boy, here we go. Another election year and more stories about supposed attacks on the U.S., either physically, by computers or whatever. It never ends. Just stop. Every election year, just weeks before the election, some sort of new attack on the U.S. is supposed to happen. It’s getting very old. Stop it.

I would like this message to go to the lady who was having a terrible time getting down the stairs to go to the doctor. There is a service out of Central DuPage Hospital called Call Doc. They will come to your house and do everything that needs to be done; X-rays, everything. My husband had MS and we had them for years. Don’t forget the name; call Doc. Dr. Cornwell out of Central DuPage. Good luck.

The program is actually called Home Care Physicians, and according to a CDH physician referral specialist, the program is available 24 hours a day, serving homebound individuals. Their office is at 18 N. Main St., Wheaton, and their phone number is 630-614-4960.–JAC

York Township calling. I read in SPEAK OUT about the stealing of Romney-Ryan signs. We, too have had blocks of Romney-Ryan signs taken. This is not a prank. You can be arrested, go to court, pay a fine. Besides, it doesn’t make the Democrats look very fair or honest now, does it?

* * *

Hi. I’m just making a report that our political signs have been stolen in the neighborhood—not only mine, but my neighbors and parents, who are right around the corner. I live in Lombard.

* * *

To the person who last week from District 5 and the other people who have been crying foul for the three trustees who objected to Trustee Gron being deemed the acting village president, have you ever thought that they have a valid point? I live in District 1, Greg Gron’s district, and have been completely disappointed in the fact that since Trustee Gron’s re-election three and a half years ago, he has basically been non-existent. I completely understand that he and his family have opened a new restaurant and he has been very busy. I’m very happy for them.  However, he was elected to do a job for District 1 also and has not been fulfilling that job. So I don’t feel, if he has not had time to do the business of his district, what makes people think he has the time to run the village? Just because someone has the most experience on the board does not necessarily make them the most qualified for the position. Do you not think that the three trustees who opposed his appointment have seen his apparent inability to do his job over the past few years?

* * *

SPEAK OUT readers, you may agree, you may disagree. Number one, to straighten out all our problems, I think we should fire every politician who’s in office. Those people had their chance, have been in office too long, and caused all these problems, so let’s put somebody else in. The other thing is, I think all these big newspapers should get rid of their commentators. They don’t ever come up with any good ideas. All they do is write their articles criticizing what the other party didn’t do right, but they never put down their ideas and let us find how accurate or how good their ideas are. Anybody who can do nothing but criticize should shut their mouth and quit the job.

* * *

This is in response to the Lombard caller who thought people who had comments against the president were being disrespectful. We live in a country where we are allowed freedom of speech. We can criticize our own family members, co-workers, etc., but that doesn’t mean we do not respect them. We are entitled to a difference of opinions and our right to express them.

* * *

Recently our infamous president stated that Egypt is not an ally or an enemy. Then why are we giving them $30 billion a year? Isn’t it time we stop giving our money to these countries that don’t like us?

* * *

Hi. I’m just answering the person’s remarks about looking at all the facts before voting. I’ve looked at all the facts, I saw all the facts and I know who I’m voting for and it isn’t going to be Obama. You need to look at the facts yourself. Romney is the one who will help this country. I get a little flustered by people who think they know everything and who are helping Obama seemingly wreck this country.

* * *

This is in response to those callers who said we need to go see the movie, “2016: Obama’s America” if you’re planning to vote for Obama. The creator of this film, Dinesh D’Souza, is a member of several right wing think tanks. He’s also written a couple of books. One was “Enemy at Home: The Cultural Left.” He blames liberals for the attacks on 9-11. He also wrote a book called “End Racism” where he blames black people and liberals for racism, and he rejects the idea that slavery was a racist institution. He also calls Catholic bishops liberal pawns and he criticizes affirmative action. The movie is filled with inaccuracies and exaggeration, and I think that this man’s movie is not one you want to believe when you’re planning on voting.

This is a Lombard resident and parent of a Glenbard East high school student calling. I bought two tickets to see the American English concert at the high school last week and I cannot find the words to describe how proud I was of our marching band and our booster club parents. The event was worth every penny. People who visited Lombard to see that show were outwardly impressed. What a great night for Lombard, our kids and our high school. Go Rams. I will be back for the next show.

* * *

I think after the recent trustees’ meetings, the citizens of the Village of Lombard need to come together and vote all of the trustees out of office as soon as possible.

* * *

First off, I’d like to say how much respect and gratitude I have for the Lombard police department, and I thank you very much for watching over us in Lombard. I do have one question, though. Where are you? I have been living here for 30 years and I used to see your squad cars patrolling up and down the streets; sometimes three, four times a day they would pass my home. That made me feel safe. I know that you respect us and I know your job is to protect us, but I think that not only do we need to see you more often, I think that all the thugs who are breaking into cars—which is making our police blotter longer and longer—need to be reminded that you are here. So, please, let us see you a little bit more.

* * *

To all the supporters of Obama, I have one thing to say. Go see the movie. Maybe you’ll have a different idea. Oh, by the way, if you don’t and you still believe his rhetoric, I have a bridge to sell you.

* * *

The Lombard village board is showing us they missed the point. The trustees should be dedicated to the people who voted for him or her to occupy the position, not to the people who campaigned for that person for the position or helped them get there. Mr. Gron may not possess everything for the position of pro-tem president, but neither does anyone else. We all have faults. Trustee Gron has more time and experience than any other board member. Gron should have automatically taken over. The rest of the board should leave their political agendas at home.

* * *

I now realize why I do not and will not ever advertise my political leanings with yard signs. With all the vandalism in the form of sign thefts, I don’t want to feel like people are slinking around on my property and trespassing. I don’t like to think it’s happening in my neighbors’ yards either—that’s close to home. What would these thieves do if the sign were in a window or on someone’s car? Good reason to keep my political beliefs to myself.
