Unbelievable. A caller in the Jan. 22 SPEAK OUT is complaining that our mail carriers are walking across the snow-covered grass and damaging the grass underneath. In this very brutal winter we have had, that this caller would deny a hardworking mail carrier the right to cut corners is unbelievable. Pride goeth before the fall. This person does not have respect for the mail carrier but instead is worried about his or her blades of grass.

Lombard residents, please call or e-mail your trustees or the village president over having to shovel or snow blow again, our driveway aprons, due to public works throwing snow back one half up the apron when plowing streets. Maybe someone at the village hall would get the workers to drive slower or figure out another solution. Many people are elderly, injured or sick, maybe a single mother and get very frustrated and angry. That’s why you see people throw the snow right back into the street, because they are so frustrated with this snow being thrown back at them half-way up the driveway apron. Thank you.

This is Lombard calling. What’s with all the loose dogs in Madison Meadow? Isn’t there some kind of leash law? Thanks.

Lombard here. All you winter whiners out there, where do you live? In Chicagoland, by an inland lake. Just hang in there for a few days. The weather always changes. I’ve been here for 85 years and I’m still surviving. Smile, you’ll look a lot better. Goodbye.

Lombard calling with a big thanks to the kind lady, Sue, at the Village of Lombard who took my call this morning asking for assistance with pot holes on my Lombard street and also for a blocked sewer. Everything was taken care of in a matter of hours and we’re very appreciative. Thank you to everyone involved. Bye.

Here’s a great idea. Let’s put an Aldi’s store where Mr. Z’s there, because they’re going to add a hundred and some stores this year. We might as well use a nice one. Great location. Thank you, bye.

Could somebody please respond about what’s happening with the property where Kmart was on Roosevelt Road in Lombard? Oh, the village, they’re not allowed to respond to SPEAK OUT, are they? But, what about a Meijer? There isn’t a Meijer anywhere around; there’s one in Melrose Park and there’s one in Aurora and one in Bloomingdale, but none in our west suburbs. Wouldn’t that be awesome? Has the village thought about contacting Meijer about that property? Maybe if the village at least would read SPEAK OUT and get that idea, then somebody could let us know. Bye.

What’s with the Lombard Post Office? It’s now 7:30 on Friday evening and still no mail. I have gotten mail one day this week, only on Wednesday. I understand the cold on Monday and Tuesday, but what happened to Thursday and Friday? I called the post office this morning and they assured me my mail would be here today. Still no mail. It’s 7:30 at night.

To whom it may concern. If you can’t find time to shovel your stairs or so forth for the mail carrier, how would you like to go to the post office and pick up your mail?

This is Lombard calling. I just wonder what is going on with the Lombard Post Office. The service on West Harrison Road and in our area is terrible. We went three days without mail this week and now this is Saturday, it’s almost a balmy 40-degree day and there’s still no mail on our street. Something has got to be done. Do we need new management there or what? Come on, guys, mail should be delivered each day. Thank you for listening.

This is Lombard calling. I just want to let people know and I would really like to find out from the post office why, it is Sunday morning and as of late Saturday night when we checked the mail there was no mail. This is the second day, Friday and Saturday, with no mail. Went out this morning and found mail in the mailbox. It contained all the grocery ads that we normally get on a Tuesday or Wednesday; came out on Sunday. Something’s wrong with the post office. It is totally ridiculous and we don’t have mailboxes for mail carriers to walk around. They just need to drop it off at the mailbox in the front. Thank you. Bye.

This really irks me: derelict dog/homeowners where the dog never gets walked and their measly 50 foot front walk never gets shoveled. I know many of these homes have hardy, athletic teenagers who could do the work. Many of these kids could earn money shoveling for other neighbors. Our snow blower went into the shop yesterday and we—70-year-old man and 60-year-old woman—just shoveled 300 feet of sidewalk and a 60-foot driveway. We would have gladly paid anyone $50 to clear it. Someone complained about being on the northwest side of Lombard—I am here, too— being retired—us too—and having to clear his/her own sidewalk because no one would offer to do it. Did this retired person ever ask to pay someone? Often people with snowblowers will help without wanting money, but you have to ask for help first. Amen.

Hi, my father, who lives in the 300 block of South Lombard, would like to thank all of his neighbors who help him out; when there’s snow on the ground, they shovel and snow blow his driveway and sidewalk. In the summer they cut his lawn for him. My father would like to thank them very, very much and so would my family. Thank you to my father’s neighbors. It’s greatly appreciated.

Lombard calling. I realize we’ve had a lot of snow this winter, but I just wonder why the village blocks the entrances to sidewalks, which is against village ordinance and is also unsafe for pedestrians. Thank you.

Hello, SPEAK OUT. I want to make a quick comment in regard to our post office service. I own a business in town and I also live in town and the delivery has been abysmal. I haven’t received mail at my home on a regular basis for months and when we called and asked the reason for it, we were told we were not on a regular route. We live right in the middle of town. I also have a business that depends on accurate mail delivery because we have checks and bills coming in all the time and I need to pay my employees. We have been getting terrible service from the post office in regard to our mail; nothing in our mailbox, letters in the wrong box, letters that we mail out to customers that we have been sending to for the last five or 10 years are coming back “address unknown.” If I were our postmaster, I wouldn’t do any interviews. Matter of fact, I wouldn’t even show my face at the post office. We’ve gone over there and tried to talk to her about the problems and have gotten no response. Thank you very much.

I vowed just to call just to address issues pertaining to Lombard, but watching the media, specifically the weathermen the last month, since when is 1-2, 2-3, 2-4 inches a snow storm? Stop with the hyperbole. One to 4 inches of snow is not a snow storm. Stop whipping people into a frenzy. You’re just doing it for the viewers. You want the people to watch. Channel 2, Channel 5, Channel 7, Channel 9, CLTV, whatever, just stop. One to 4 inches of snow is not a snow storm; it’s not a blizzard. Just stop, please.

I wanted to compliment our Lombardian delivery boy and his family for always delivering the paper promptly, even in this bad weather, and always taking care to wrap it and put it on the porch. He is doing a great job and I thank him and his sister and his family for doing such a great job with our newspaper.

To those who have complained about not receiving mail during sub-zero weather, shame on you. Would you want to be outside working in dangerously cold weather? Would you want anyone you love to do so? Common sense tells us that we may not receive mail during harsh weather conditions. Good for the postal service for caring about their employees. Thank you.
